the real answer is that it doesnt have a name, because all vespa moped engines are the same.
it's the vintage vespa moped engine, you don't need an engine code cause there's only one, and I don't think they used it on any thing else.

Yeah, the clutch/variator is just a red herring...even the cranks are the same, though they came with both 10mm and 12mm wrist-pins, with no rhyme nor reason as to which got which. Other than that, and a VERY few '81 models that had oil-injection, they were all functionally identical.
I did make an odd discovery the other day, though. I was tearing down a friends Grande, and her piston had two normal rings and "USA" stamped on the crown. Every other vespa engine I have seen and worked on had one standard ring and a dykes ring, and "U" stamped on top marking the exhaust port direction. I'd hazard a guess and say someone put a TFR-USA piston in it, but thats the only idea I had and I've never seen a TFR piston, so I cant say.

there are 20mph, 25mph, and 30mph bikes. an easy way to tell is ride them and see how fast they go.
so far, the difference I've noticed is only the intake size. I've been trying to determine if there's anything else different, but the timing cams seem the same shape and size, woodruff looks like same location, crankshaft rotary valve seem to open and close intake window at the same timing, final reduction gears seem to be the same, transfer ports are a bit smaller, and the exhaust port is down 1mm more from top of cylinder in 20mph version.
Your just talking about engine right? Because I know the carbs are different.

Is the intake smaller on the 25 model? I am trying to enfasten one and was hoping to avoid cracking the case to bore out the intake but if its substantially smaller, I guess I don't have a choice.

I think all the cases are 12mm intake, worth boring.
err...that didn't show up right. it has an arrow, then it has "SC" stamped next to that
grandes originally they came w/ a white sticker on engine frame denoting speed, 20-25-30. moped riders has more info. next time you ask for help try spell check or try typing in a language that resembles english a little more please.
that speed sticker is also decided by the final reduction gears in the rear hub. I don't think this applies for single speeds like the non-variated ciao.
there are different ratios though,. and a good way to determine what gears you have is to see how many times the clutch bell spins during one wheel revolution. i think i've heard that the slowest ratio is 12:1. And I think the fastest stock i've heard is 8:1 or 9:1. I think Malossi racing gears are 5:1, but i can't remember if that's right.
No. 12:1 definitely came stock, and I know Vespa made 9.5:1 gears (I have some). Malossi is 9:1.
