grande wheels on a ciao

i know people have put SI wheels and bravo wheels on a ciao, but has anyone put grande wheels on one? i just put mine on the other day and noticed that the back one is so fat that it touches the subframe on the right hand side just a titch. i'm thinking i'm gonna cut a hole in the subframe there to give it some room, and then probably weld in some supports. any ideas as to what to use to support it? i don't have pics today, maybe wednesday.

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

What size is the wheel?

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

true it. check the spacing right to left, and adjust the spokes accordingly. it should fit.

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

I thought Grandes had two different sized wheels, like a 16 in the front and a 17 in the back or vice versa. And because of this they don't work very well with all the other Vespas which just use 16s.

Maybe it isn't every Grande but I remember a problem switching the 4 star mags between the two.

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

what are you trying to do? can you just use the hub if youre trying to go variated?

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

Ciaos come with 17" wheels. I've got a Grande 17" wheel on my Ciao. the spokes are the same length variated or not, so can lace one to the other too.

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

it's the rear wheel that's a problem, the front fits fine. the only other thing i can think is that the tube in the rear wheel doesn't have much air in it right now. maybe it'll fit once it's inflated properly.

grande wheel dimensions:

2 1/2"x17" front tire

2 3/4"x16" rear tire

ciaos use 17 in front and back, SI and Bravo use 16 in front and back.

my grande wheels are mag wheels, so no spoke adjustments, and you can't adjust the axle as it mounts to the frame with 2 bolts on either side. 2 3/4" is an awfully wide moped tire.

i have some ciao wheels i could possibly switch hubs with (they are all spoked wheels, not sure if that makes a difference), but my grande wheels are in so much better shape, plus they are beefer as i want better traction for my build as it's going to be a lot faster than stock.

i still don't have pics as i haven't been by the garage. sorry.

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

i was talking about the gearbox hub. not the part the spokes lace into. anyways.

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

sounds like you need skinnier tire no?

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

i understood you matt, i might have to swap hubs if i don't want to cut the subframe away. i'm going there today with a pump, maybe it'll fit after it has air.

macelius, i don't think you can get a skinnier tire to fit properly on these wheels.

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

yeah you can. they make tires different sizes. you can just get a tire that's 2 1/2 instead. That's probably your issue.

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

well, i tried a good tire and tube on the frame and stock 16x2 3/4 does not fit on a ciao. it actually is worse when it's inflated, fyi.

so smaller tires it is i suppose

2 3/4 is a pretty fat tire. My friend fit a 2 1/2x16 in the rear of his using a rear grande snowflake.

Re: grande wheels on a ciao

i wouldn't cut the frame, its flimsy enough as it is, get a 2.5 or 2.25.
