103 clutch problems

So I recently put the polini tunable kit on my variator and now when I tighten the nut down the nylon washer underneath seems to be sticking to the back of the nut and locking the variator on, even when I grease it.

The only way I can get the clutch disengage is I I only torque the nut to about 10 ft/lbs but even with locktite it isn't enough.

All the internals are facing the right direction, I took off and reinstalled the clutch tons of times before I polini'ed it and I never had any problems before.

Re: 103 clutch problems

the multivar does this too. i removed the nylon washer and it works great. i guess you can add different spacing washers to the inside of the variator and get results also but i don't really want to mess with those.

Re: 103 clutch problems

So do you just use the nut by itself on the end?

Re: 103 clutch problems

you got it. nut by itself. totally ok. most of the time it wont even touch because the belt naturally holds the variator away from the nut.

Re: 103 clutch problems

My variator doesn't really have any play like most I've seen, the nut would just rub on the plate, metal on metal without a washer seems like potential trouble to me.

Re: 103 clutch problems

sounds like you are going to need to adjust some of the spacing washers in the variator to give you a little more play. i didn't want to do this myself because i have no clue what this does to the variator. i know you can get them at handy bikes. i ordered a new one for the inside cheek of my variator and they sent me a shit ton of them varying in thickness. some of them were even see through nylon. weird but you can get em. maybe you might check out the engine parts manual they have and look for the washers for certain bikes that the variators work on. i know my set up worked and i have a lvs. the washer i would try and replace would be the inside cheek one(facing the side of the bike). its pretty thick already and when i was having problems with my variator idling i had to replace it cuz it got munched. the one i used was a bit thinner and it didn't alter perf at all.

Re: 103 clutch problems

I had already been looking at variator parts on handybikes, is the washer you are talking about the one that sits against the clutch drum? I also noticed that i'm missing the washer thatsits next to the weird spacer that is flat on one side and countersunk on the other.

Re: 103 clutch problems

thats the one.

yeah you need that washer(the nylon one thas grooved on one side). maybe thats the problem. i would think that would give you more play but maybe its allowing you to tighten the variator nut too much? i dunno. maybe wait for some other peeps to chime in with their expertise.

Re: 103 clutch problems

Are you using that outer plate from the polini kit? Seems kind of useless, I had it on there and it was a little uneven and vibrating so I took it off. I just use the pull side with the cut-aways for accessing the weights, and the weights themselves, and leave the rest of the polini stuff off.

Re: 103 clutch problems

I have the nylon washer that sort of sits inside where the back variator nut is, the one I am refering to is number 10 in the pic, i think you are talking about number 12 which I have and is in good shape.

Re: 103 clutch problems

I think all the aluminum plate does is make the steel one more rigid, stamped steel plus lots of vibration equals bendy city.

Re: 103 clutch problems

weird. i was talking about #30 actually. its a nylon thrust washer that keeps the rolling bearings in place. i don't think i have #10 either. variators are mucho strange mojo.

Re: 103 clutch problems

oh and on mine #30 sits outside the #12.

Re: 103 clutch problems

I must be missing that all I have is a steel spacer pressed into the plate holding the roller bearings in and the flat nylon washer with the 2 tabs on it.

Could be why when I cinch it down the whole thing locks up.

Re: 103 clutch problems

So I tried to put the variator back together without the nylon part, and the nut is too shallow and I can't get a wrench, socket or pretty much anything in there to tighten it.

I'm using the stock nut, you guys using different nuts?

Re: 103 clutch problems

i am using the nut that came with the malossi variator.

Re: 103 clutch problems

You guys are talking about clutch parts.

From what I understand, peugeot made two slightly different clutches. You'll see the more common one on pretty much everything after around 74... Miguel and I have a clutch with a huge nylon spacer in place of the simpler cupped metal spacer.

Use all of the stock clutch parts in the order they were provided and don't use the thin nylon spacer that comes with the variator.

Like Lee said. It works perfect...

Side Note:

I keep seeing you on your peugeot, cris. You're hauling ass!

Re: 103 clutch problems

Mine is definatly the one with the nylon washers, I think I just need a different nut. The way it is now I can't torque down the nut but it looks like it will work just fine.

So what's size is that nut?
