install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

Is it difficult? I mean, it doesn't look hard, but on TreatsHQ there's a note about "it's up to you to make this work" which makes me kinda nervous . . . there's nothing more to it than bolting it on and wiring it up, right?

If there's some classic thread about this, please point me to it - I did searches like "hpi install" "puch cdi set up" and so on, didn't find anything.

Thanks for your help

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

I wanna know also couldn't find anything.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

its easy to put on

probably a super bitch to time it exactly right. with out a timing light and a timing caliper

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

what about with a timing light and timing caliper? i'm sure they've got both at my local motorcycle shop

Nick from QK has an HPI on his ZA50 Pinto. I remember he was having the hardest time getting it timed just right. I think if you get it close then just tweak it bit by bit you'll get it. When his is timed right that bike RIPS. Sucks that it does not have a proper lighting coil so you will need to run battery lights.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

it say's it has the lighting coil.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

that coil is for a normal flywheel set up though. you could put it on there, just won't do anything.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

The lighting coil is junk, but I do know one person who got it to work by using LED's. I'm skeptical though.

So your saying, to use the lighting coil, I'd have to have the regular flywheel mounted over the CDI? That would be pretty lame . . . one of the main benefits of this to me is that it reduces rotating mass. It makes sense though, because how would the coil work without the magnetized flywheel spinning around. Can anyone confirm/deny?

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

It's a piece of cake to put on the HPI..

2.8mm before tdc than line up the 2 marks. Thats it.

oh great that looks really simple, phew.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

It says you can install a switch between the yellow and blue wires to choose between curves. Has anybody messed with this much? Curious how it works. Also it would be easy setting this up with the use of a travel indicator. I am in the process of making mine. Might have to bring it to work tonight.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

from what I've been told there are two years of HPI one works with the lighting coil, one doesn't.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

Easy to install I have them on two of my bikes and they rip.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

TheRustyMackerel /

what are you doing about lights, might i ask?

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

The timing is really easy you just need a precise timing tool, the reason that I had so much trouble with it id, I didn't know how far before TPC to set it. Turns out that the best setting was the stock setting and the documentation on the HPI website of no less that 2mm before TDC made the bike run horribly. I also had to drill and tap a hole to allow the stator have two mounting screws.

The lighting coil will work with the internal rotor but the output is only 12 volts 10 watts, which is about enough to power ... nothing. Maybe some LEDs but its a real challenge to change over all your lights as well as add a rectifier to change the AC to the DC for the LEDs. I opted to add a rectifier and a battery charging unit to to power the lights. The coil was not enough to keep the battery charged even under heavy riding conditions, and only with the brake light on. (running and headlight on a switch)

Overall I would call the HPI CDI a racing CDI.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

quick question to tommy or anyone else who is running the HPI CDI...

did you bother to cut out 3 of the spokes on the main gear shaft in order to reduce the amount of rotating mass?

also,

what is everyone doing as far as lights go?

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

TheRustyMackerel /

i'm very interested about lights - especially if anyone is running a system off of that 10w coil.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

No I didnt cut the main gear. I think thats kinda dumb. more important to lose weight on the sides of the crank than in the center.

I just use a bicycle light. A super gnarly ones. its brighter than any moped light.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

Tommy, did you lighten your clutch bell?

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

Nope, just my clutch and the ignition.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

The website that Derk Jan. posted up has a lot of useful info, especially on the parts.

The standard setup from HPI uses one curve.

<a href="http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e20/novakarl/Puch%20HPI%20Parts/?action=view&current=1C.jpg"; target="_blank"><img src="http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e20/novakarl/Puch%20HPI%20Parts/1C.jpg"; border="0" alt="HPI.BE Kit Complete"></a>

The HPI.BE site lists this lighting coil as 12V 10W...

<a href="http://s36.photobucket.com/albums/e20/novakarl/Puch%20HPI%20Parts/?action=view&current=C.jpg"; target="_blank"><img src="http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e20/novakarl/Puch%20HPI%20Parts/C.jpg"; border="0" alt="HPI.BE 10W Light Coil"></a>

Look at all that wasted space... I think this needs to be re-wound.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

Wow. I had no idea it had _that_ big of a gap. I'm definitely getting one and rewinding it. Would it be better to taper the coils so they're bigger on the ends and form a curve that conforms to the circumference of the rotor?

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

could a light coil from a tomos cdi be easily modified to work with the puch hpi cdi?

also,

tommy >>> could you post a picture/a link to the bike light system that you are using? i was browsing websites for one last night, but i'm worried that whatever i get will not be bright enough...

It lights the road amazingly, but it isnt the most visible to oncoming traffic since its so small. I am going to try and mount it inside a headlight bucket and see if that helps.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

sweet dude, thanks!

i was thinking about doing the same thing, mounting whatever i get in a headlight bucket.

dealextreme.com has a bunch of cheap battery powered lights that look like that they could be easily mounted in a headlight bucket. search for bright camping light and a bunch of round ones show up.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

Ok so I've found bicycle HID lights with rechargeable batteries - that seems to be the answer for the tail light (that'll go well with the look of the bike I'm building, anyway). But, could I run my tail light off of a 10w light coil? Obvi I could get a bicycle tail light, too, but then I'd lose my brake light function . . . I got pulled over for that once.

Thanks for all your help, everyone.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

i just bought this:

shipping, i figure i can't go wrong. it looks like it would fit perfectly in a headlight bucket. i'll let everyone know if it works.

Re: install HPI CDI on Puch Maxi

not bright enough for head light but it would be great for a tail light if it was red
