ZA50 Reliability, Rebuild, and New Dampeners

In the process of rebuilding a ZA50 and remember hearing some rumors of these things locking up at high speeds. Is this possible? Is it from not properly shimming? I did acquire a set of original Puch shims. Shouldn't have a problem finding the bearings, but heard a non-Puch bearing might need different shimming. Anybody have issues with having to shim differently than what is originally suggested?

And where can I find a set of new shift dampeners?

Re: ZA50 Reliability, Rebuild, and New Dampeners

I haven't heard of ZA50s locking up, but shearing gear teeth on the 2nd speed happens alot. Motion Left Mopeds in Elkhart, IN. has the shift pucks you need.

Just make em out of Delrin. Wonderful stuff and it will handle all the power you put into it without knocking your teeth out.

or order new ones from quarterkick

I've had it lock up on me. It's not to fun. New shift dampeners are easy to find. Just check periodically to see how well they hold up.

Re: ZA50 Reliability, Rebuild, and New Dampeners

Even if you HAVE a new Puch bearing, you STILL may need to re-shim.

That was my problem, still is. Needed only a new L 17. Got it from an old Puch dealer. Installed with only the left side removed. Result? The case cannot close. Period.

Apparently I now need to open the opposite side and fool around with all that stuff, which I didn't expect to need to do. (You can look for my old post, last year sometime).

Used to be that those dampeners were only available in Europe, but there are lots of sources in states now.

I would be more interested in 1) who did you get your shims from and 2) what is the role of the larger "shim/spacer" on the opposite side? It was manufactured in 5 sizes, acts like a shim and must have a larger role in appropriate spacing that the very thin shims otherwise referred to.

Dunno what Delrin is, but mine are homemade. Maybe from that stuff(?) I think the neoprine (sp?) ones look cheap in comparison. Too small and brittle. If you get NOs ones they may be even more brittle.

Was it bad dampeners that caused it to lock up (guessing so)?

And where do you get Delrin or other materials in order to fabricate your own? Do you simply cut circular inserts? Any tricks you guys can share? Thanks

Hmm. It's not really my secret to give away. Dunno if it's even supposed to be a secret. Haha... but just to be sure. Message Jimmy from the Creatures.
