Blowing Magneto Side Crank Seals

) Cupermcnewbster ( /

OK, weird issue, I blew 2 e50 magneto side seals and I'm not sure why.

Both are K-star seals sealed with Orange RTV. They didn't completely blow out, but both were very loose and I pulled one out very easily with some needle nose pliers. I don't think I've had this happen before using black RTV, so maybe its the orange? Maybe the seals aren't seating correctly? (cases were clean and looked pretty good, maybe both are warped?). Anyone have any other ideas?

Should I use yamabond instead? Help!

Re: Blowing Magneto Side Crank Seals

i would take yr cases and crank to a bearing shop. explain yr situation. they could measure everything and probably give you a seal with a tighter more interference fit. e50 case aluminum is weak and its not a ridiculous notion that it can get worn. you shouldnt have to rtv them they should pinch. (are your seals getting pinched -check for the thin lip where the cases pinched them) if not yr cases are worn or the seals are just too loose like your saying. either way bearing shop. this is a walk in the park issue for them. just my thoughts hope that works out. good luck dude!

yea one isn't really pinched at all. The rtv seeped, but the seal is basically flat all around.

I'm curious as to how the aluminum is worn when the seal is fixed? Maybe these K-star seals are a tad small?

What seals is everyone else using?

i think kstar seals are for aftermarket crank of some kind

more ideas?

Re: Blowing Magneto Side Crank Seals

I am using k-star seals on my e50 but I also have a dmp crank.

Re: Blowing Magneto Side Crank Seals

also maybe they are flipped around the wrong way.

Re: Blowing Magneto Side Crank Seals

i install my seals on the our ring dry,

they are not meant to be installed with RTV

if you are still wanting to use sealant, use somehting that is semi drying

like hylomar, curil2 or hondabond/yamabond

Re: Blowing Magneto Side Crank Seals

also, try lubing/packing the innner lips with a heavy grease for installing

this will help the seal from being damaged from installing, witch can weaken it

our = outer in first post

Re: Blowing Magneto Side Crank Seals

why r u using rtv??? seals go in just on the metal, I bets thats why.

weirdd, I always thought everything had to get sealed up. Noob move.

But still, why aren't they pinched? They didn't slide out originally when I built the motor (well not visually) and the rtv mostly squirted out the sides, so between the seal and case there is only a hint of rtv. I dunno.

Re: Blowing Magneto Side Crank Seals

How much sealant do you have between the 2 case halves? If you have too much sealant there, you have a chance that your case doesn't bolt as tightly together as it should.

Use only a very thin film of sealant on your case halves, no sealant on your seals, tighten it down and let it set overnight b4 using it.

Re: Blowing Magneto Side Crank Seals

don't be using rtv to seal your cases noob!
