70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

so i ordered a 70cc kit for one of my expresses. now my question is, which would it be better on.. i have an 80, wind start, single speed or an 82, kick start 2 speed. im thinking on the 82 motor cause the adjustable oil pump, but i can switch that around to either bike. im more wondering on the whole shifting thing. ideas?

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

1 and 2 speeds both have the same final gear ratio, so unless your real fat I'd go one speed. I've also seen more then one 2 speed that had an exploded 1st gear on a stock cylinder.

If you're kitting just premix.

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

oh, im fat. 6'5'' 320 or so.

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Go 2 speed, run 10w30 non-syn, upgrade your carb to a 15+ (ire rick makes great intakes), get new brake pads and tires, check your cables, and absolutely replace the exhaust with an expansion chamber.

If you are really 320 lbs you should consider replacing the rear shock (I think that the recommended max is like 160-180 on the NC/NA frames).

If you have any ?'s along the way just post; there are few kitted express around now (finally).

I personally prefer the wind-up/points version the best, but 2 speeds are nice for the big guys.

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Which kit btw?

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Whao rapid fire posting from the bar...

Iowa or non-iowa versions?

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Derek knows his shit so listen to him !

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

the 70cc kit from treats. the 80 i have is a non iowa, the 82 is an iowa. im waiting to hear back from nash to check the numbers on a motor he has, hopefully its not iowa.

as far as carb, what size should i get? i got your email rick, im not sure which would be better, 19 or 21?

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

I run the 21mm but the 19 would work well too . It should be more fuel efficient and would speed up air flow a bit . But either will work great . Dont use the oil pump , they wont work well with a kit for many reasons . Premix like derek said . I have plugs for removing those pumps that prevent parasitic power loss from the pumps drive system and look cool too .

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Plugs for removing oil injection!

IRE Rick, Derek, if one of you would be so kind as to post a "removing the oil pump" checklist, that would be amazing.

I am super-pleased with Honda's oil injection, and I'm not kitting my Express. When filling up the tank the other day, though, I noticed a little thread of blue leaking into the gas side...

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

so when i send you my intake to have you work your magic on it, and get an adapter from you, ill probably take one of those plugs too.

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

black twingle , its so easy to remove the oil pump Clean the clamp and surrounding ares so dirt wont fall into your engine . Then just remove the clamp that holds it in place and pull it strait out . You may have to wiggle or twist a lil bit but it should come out pretty easy . Make sure the inside of the port where the pump was is clean and iol free . Maybe clean it with some alcohol on a Q-Tip . then push the IRE Rick OIL INJECTOR PLUG just slightly past flush of the surface of and tighten down until secure " Plug expands slightly " flush or slightly above the surface of the port . Then tighten down the locking acorn nut against the other and your done plugging your oil pump . You will also need to close off the line in the intake with some New tubing and a cap of some sort . Dont forget the oil tank feed line needs the same kind of treatment if it leaks between the oil and gas tanks . That should cover it all I think . Derek am I forgeting anything or maybe you have an even better way to take care of some of this?

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Nope that's about it.

You can make a cap for the in intake with a piece of line, a form of fire and an pliers; just heat the end of the line till it's starting to melt on the end then squish it with the pliers, cut to length and install.

You can also fill the pump and small section of line with oil and loop the inlet to the outlet; or loop the pump dry and just remove the pump shaft (follow above directions and just replace Rick’s plug with the closed off pump); or what I do is get a rubber plug from the hardware store, stuff it in the pump hole nice and deep and then run a bolt in the pumps retaining bolt hole to hold it in place.

Rick thanks for the offer on the intake; I copied it like a week after you posted your very first one, but with some sight changes. It looks similar to the NU one you posted except I only went 19mm all the way through to a 19mm Del knock off that comes straight out the side; I'll try to get a pic.

Sweet

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

OOOOOH. my kit showed up in the mail today

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

What is the actual model number of the 2 speed kick start express? I can find no parts list on the web that would show me what the insides of the engine looks like.

Thanks

70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

AJ, I wouldn't even use an express unless its an Urban Express. Variated Brother, FTW!!

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Salty , I'm not sure you know this but the Urban is a much weaker stamped frame that is more likely to bend or break at the rear shock mount under stress . Plus the angle on the shock is greater on the Urban I am about 240 lbs and I have bent the frame on my Urban . Where as the regular Express is a tube frame and is in my opinion much stronger and it feels that way too . It also can be braced more easily . AJ is a big boy too so this may be a factor in his chose to build it . Now , if you take the nu50 motor and put it on the Express frame thats a different story . But thats here nor there .and one can do anything they want to given enough time . tools , parts skill experience and so on to do so . Just sayn man , I think he has both bikes and this is his first build so let him do what he wants . Lets not make this confusing for him . He can build an urban too . Later or whatever .

AJ , if you want to build an Urban motor or an Express motor I'm behind you all the way . No sweat bro

Salty , You are right tho it is nice to have a variator to tune on but for a first build thats just one more thing to worry about and to go wrong . I think that he should take one step at a time . Plus he can still use a lot of the performance parts on the Urban later if he wants .

Just my two cents . So I will shut up now .

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Hell he can even just mod the urban without kitting it and still get a ton of performance fo cheap . Hell free .

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

well i have a 82 iowa urban and a 82 non iowa urban. whats good mods for those? im used to tinkering with expresses.

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Its pretty much the same mods, accept for the ones for the tranny. Props on trying to make a fast express though. I love the look on peoples faces when you pass them at like 37 in a twenty five and the bike is just screaming. The thing is your not really flying, but man it feels like it on those tiny things. people are just like, what the fuck is that thing supposed to be?

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Rick can use what he wants, just my 2 cents. Its just tuning expresses, 1 and 2 speeds, you are limited to the gearing. I was wondering if a guy took gears from the rear of a SR express if they would fit and if they would give you a higher gear ratio on a an Urban express. I will sit back and read now.

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

I meant AJ can use what ever he wants.

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

LOL I had to reread the earlier post to understand why you said that . LOL

I love to see all Honda machines rip it up .

Man I got my Urban pulling the front wheel and hitting 40+ and getting there super quick then I wanted more , so

then I cut windows in the variator to allow the weights to move to their full travel and now I need more power to pull that gearing . My pipe used to hit at 30 ish , now Im running over 50 and not on pipe so adjustments are being made so that I can run that kind of gearing . Hopefully I get it all set up so I have all that low end torque and still hit 65 .

I see jimmy johns in my future . dirtyrog

Anyway kitting an express is way easier for starters and all I was sayn was its a good starting point . I will gladly help with either project . Giving pros and cons and helping where I can . I dont want to tell anyone to do anything they dont want to .

IRE Rick

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

how much for you to take say, my non iowa urban and mod it. cause i dont want to. :D

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

hey, anyone know what size the hole is to bolt up the exhaust on this 70cc kit? cause this one doesnt have studs, it has threaded holes.

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

You can use Honda studs or metric 6/1 bolts . Same thread as the bolts I sent you to mount your intake down with . Ace Hardware has a nice selection to choose from .

Just FYI I was pretty easily able to mount an Urban reed cage to an nc50 case with very little dremel work to open up the case a little wider . Urban/hobbit reeds will be your best bet to make your nc50 screem .

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

AJ get one of those spree shocks man!! youll love it!

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

Spree shocks are better on a nc50 than stock? Good to know, I have been looking to upgrade my mono shock. Lotsa crappy roads round these parts. Why not just get the performance reeds instead of messing with the dremel?

I have heard that zuma reed cages/reeds can be modded to enfastenize expresses relatively easily.

Re: 70cc kit express. 1 speed or 2?

I am talking about useing the perpormance reeds . The problem with the nc50 reed cage is that its openings are half the size of the power reeds . NC50 reed cages are super restrictice when you are running a 19mm or 21 mm phbg . Just trust me when I say you are MUCH better off takeing a tiny amount of material from both sides of the case s intake opening to fit the much larger reed block of the nu50 or pa50 . I will have to post a pic of the two side by side later when I get home . You will understand then .

IRE Rick
