AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

While my AV/10 setup is off my moby, I thought I would toss on a ported Autista(?) 50cc kit that I got from Responsible John. Apparently the portwork had been done by Maitland (yarrrr!!) but no one has ever actually run the kit on a bike. Unfortunately, I shredded the internal threads on my variator puller the last time I tuned my Variplus (for an aggressive 70cc V=AV/10 set-up), so I had to leave the weight at 10.2 grams -- a little heavy for a high rev 50cc set-up. Riding it around, it wasn't much fun, I could to about 30mph, but never hit the revs I needed to engage my Ninja G3 pipe. As a quick fix / variator cheat we decided I should try out a "launch lever". Here is what I came up with:

Basically I broke down a 16" batavus front wheel I've had under my deck for the last year and used the mounting hardware and the existingmounting hole for the stock moby pipe int he AV/7 bottom end. The front axel was threaded all the way which was nice, but it's 10mmso I had to open up the mounting holes a little with a dremel. I used the small wheel nuts on the outside, and the fat ones on the inside to reduce stress on the bottom end. I use the Ducatti CDI, so there was plenty of clearance, might be a little tighter with the stock electrical.Still need to test it out, but pushing it forward with my foot on the pedal feels pretty comfortable.

nice i think i'm gonna do the same thing if i ever get to rebuilding my superbecane it looks super cool sitting in my room.

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

Please explain what this does then... wait - are you pushing forward with your foot trying to hold the variator into a low gear ratio?

?

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

yep thats what he's doin

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

Does that fuck up the variator? How hard do you have to push? Weird shit.

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

You push just a smidgen, but that also depends on rpms and the weights. Looks to be pretty solid Ian.... better give it a try today and report back!

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

Don't have to push very hard at all. After riding it around a bit, It definitely shoves the motor up into the higher revs necessary for pipe engagement, but optimally, I think it would be better to be pushing on the variator side, I just don't have the clearance for it.

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

But this is in lieu of getting back into your variator and changing weights, right? I shouldn't consider this over a varplus or something right?

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

correct^^^

think of the launch lever as that little extra amount of on the fly tuning. its basically adjusting ur spring tension as you ride for optimal performance in different situations.

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

I just saw another older post where somebody called his Simonini pipe a "manual variator adjuster" and now it is sinking in. At first I thought this was a little ghetto but now I see it is another little trick from you mbk senior blasters. cool.

just step on your pipe. thats what i do

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

yeah, just break your pipe, thats what i would do

did that. twice!

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

Ummm....anyway.

I highly approve of the low tech nature of the custom launch lever. In fact I'm a little jealous that I didn't do it first.

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

i'm totally making this happen. thats genius.

Mr. Richard Dickrich /

I can't see the photos above, but I must say that the launch lever was the final piece I needed to complete my AV10 build.

I've been fooling around with this setup for months, never quite getting it right. I only have a stock spring and it's been sucking- too weak. Adding the Launch lever has allowed me to keep the engine forward and exploit that low end power. Totally fun as well.

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

Will give this a shot

Re: AV/7 'Launch Lever' [motobecane]

I can tap my Simo Proline exhaust down for a little for leverage... once I get into break-in on the Malossi kit I will see if this is even necessary.

The pictures live on in the wiki, also, I miss you Rich
