Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

This is on my Garelli SSXL. Polini, 19mm intake and carb, 110 main, 42 Idle, W9 needle. This thing just wont start with a filter on...E12 or UNI. I think the e12 is lame because its affect on top end (learned this from minarelly), and the UNI is OK. This engine slobbers fuel right off idle but Im running a 42 idle/pilot jet??? According to the PHBG wiki, the adjustment area of my screw (being all the way in/closed) indicates that I need a smaller idle jet, but I have never heard of anyone really running smaller than a 45? I really want to love this bike, she is sexy, smart, loving, but is a bitch to tune (oh and her clutch is reaaal tight adding to the tuning difficulties). Im going to switch to a 35 idle and w6 needle in the next few days but???

does it run fine otherwise? whats the plug look like?

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

Yeah, runs fairly good. Im still tuning her so the plug isnt talking to me in english...

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

god I love that bike. I want one so so bad. Oh yea mike thanks for the e50 got it rebuild kitted and riding me to work again.

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

Are you talking about actually starting the engine? What starter jet do you have? I'm assuming you're talking about a PHBG carb. There are 3 jets and the one closest to the float hinge is the one i mean. Mine came with a 60. Thats the jet that controls you fuel flow when the choke is on. Are you starting your bike with the choke on?

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

Yeah the choke size is 60 and I do typically start it with the choke, though all my bikes start fine without them. If I unthread the filter, it starts no problem. Would any one speculate on non carb related things?

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

I guessing the filter media is clean. a really hot spark will fire through all sorts of tuning ills. If you have the ignition in perfect stk order you could try putting a Bosch 6V car coil on it

i remember when AJ and i tuned his, it really hates that carb for some reason. shoot him an e-mail it runs perfect now

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

Ive thought about a weak condenser or coil. The coil is a factory one with a 2.5 foot long plug wire.....

not a bad idea.

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

if the air filter affects things at all. It's a jetting issue. Go with a leaner starter jet.

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

Well I leaned out the idle jet from a 42 to 35, and put a W6 needle in place of the W9. That finally got my mixture screw out from being closed all the way. Bike is running better, but put that air cleaner on and she just chokes down. Im quessing you mean the choke jet when you say starter jet? That should only have a bearing on things when I have the choke pulled.

Im about to throw an SHA on this bitch and see what happens.

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

Hey Micheal....I don't know if you looked at the tuning sheet, but most people are running jets around 95-96. Your all the way up at 110. Most seem like there needles are dropped all the way down to the leanest setting.

Just throwin' it out there....

Re: Why does she hate to start with a filter on?

Thanks allen, but the 110 was needed to get some chocolate love on the plug, otherwise it was gray...carb clean does not turn up a leaks either.

I did however put a 15.15 on it for fun and she runs good, but still bogs at the bottom.....

This leads me suspect it is more of a clutch issue. Even at the lowest of Idle rpm the bike wants to lurch. The clutch just engages too soon, probably bogging the engine. Im running full synthetic 20w50, but upon reading another post I seriously doubt that the oil viscocity thickens at our operating temperatures. Im going to search out some straight up 40w or 50w tomorrow and see if that helps. I even sanded the clutch some. I might see if I can find a used clutch. I got the bike with a new one already in it.
