Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

Anyone have experience with this on their ped? I just installed one on my maxi and noticed it has a few quirks with the tachometer bar and the rpm readout seems to be pretty jumpy. Also the shift indicator lights don't seem to work (due to no external power supply maybe?).

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

why do you need shift indicator lights anyway?

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

don't own one, but how does it pick up tach signal? through the wire? also check your grounds

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

I don't, I just noticed that they don't light up when they hit the RPM they're supposed to.

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

one wire runs into the coil with the blue ignition wire, and it has a ground that I ran to the ignition ground.

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

just make sure your gound is properly grounded and that the one going to the ignition wire makes good contact

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

uh re-read the installation instructions, the positive wire isn't supposed to make contact. If you are still have problems with it you might try giving trail tech a call. They are very helpful I have found. Oh yeah and carefully read the installation instructions! Everything worked on mine except the head temp sensor, which was a simple fix after I gave trail tech a call.

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

Read the instructions, they tell you everything you need to know.

The lights do not work without a external power source.

My temp gauge dose not rear temps under 100

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

Ah I got it now, I read straight over that. Are either of you using an external power source; and if so, how do you have it set up?

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

It says in the instructions you can hook it up to ac or dc power.

My Vapor tach jumps around too. I called their tech dept & they said to tape the red lead on to & parrallel the spark plug wire for about an inch & not to wind it around the spark plug wire. It helped some, but it still needs dialing in. I have a small 12v battery so it lights up real good at night. There's a pic of it on one of the other performance tuning threads, that talk about electrical parts. I got some spares that I'll sell cheap.

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

How does the speedo work?

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

spark.

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

Speedo works via a wheel sensor pickup (just like a bicycle speedo).

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

Thats a slick doohicky. where and how much?

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

^ google much?

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

They are pretty willing to help might I add, if you call them up. I also had few little problems and pretty much sorted them all out talking to them. I would suggest some sandpaper and some epoxy to affix the magnet to the hub for the speedo, otherwise the little thing launches off.

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

I went on the Trail tech website and they had a bunch of different fitments. What model do some of you use? I am interested in getting one but don't want to buy the wrong one.

It comes with the water cooled temp sensor though. So if you want to run the cylinder temp gauge you need to order the air cooled sensor : http://trailtech.net/7500-3012.html

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

I paid less than 124 for my GPS and handlebar mount... Not only does it tell me exactly how fast I'm going, but how to get there... It's also weatherproof... Garmin Quest. Found it reconditioned at Amazon for like 85 bucks. Handle bar mount was 20 I think... Doesn't tell me how hot my engine is though...

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

yeah heat sensor is by far the best thing on these i love seeing how my throttle position raises and lowers the temp of my radiator

trail tech rules too if you get the wrong sensor they ship you a new on crazy fast i got mine within 24 hours of talking to someone but they are only a state away from me

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

ok old thread but not that old, so i got everything all hooked up but i want to add the power wire to it, so it says i can hook it up to my ignition, but would it be better to hook it to the lighting wire since it has a voltage regulator ???

Re: Vapor Trail Tech speedo/tach

Yes hook it up to your lighting.
