metra 80 reed valve Huh?

Oh yea its finally running after a lot of machining and work. Its freezing here in nebraska so riding it for more than a few minuits sucks but so far it performs well. I will be pulling it back apart to cut a boost port in the piston and machine boost ports in the cylinder. I wasnt sure where to cut the boost ports yet without doing a bit more reseach but I assembled it just to get it running and see how it performed. I used a four peddle polini reed cage and made the aluminum block that it sits in. I modified a gilardoni intake from treats to fit on the reed block.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

Good job! I've heard of it, but I've never seen it.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

holy shit! fucking amazing!

ps. did you get the seat?

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

got the seat, thanks a lot. I got it sandblasted and I welded up all the bad parts. It will work great!!

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

wow! I cant wait to hear how this runs!

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

I'll keep ya posted.

use a gila piston. the latest production runs used metra 80 pistons with gilardoni actually drilling the holes in the piston.

Nice job Todd, glad it's running! Let me know when you and John have a wrenching day, I'm ready to rip mine apart. Also let John know I found a site that sells all the ZA50 bearings, seals, and shims.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

wow man, thats fucking sick. Great work! Post a video!

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

Nice work, I dig it!

Just out of curiosity since this work shows you have access to a machine shop and are handy with a dremel. Any reason you decided to go with cylinder induction vs case induction, ya could have had a top transfer port.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

you didnt ad any material to that, did you? looks like you didn't. fuck. awesome work dude.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

If you look at the the second to last photo lee he used a block of aluminum as a riser between the metra and the reed block.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

I wonder how this will perform compared to a Gila?

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

I, too, am curious as to why you chose to put the intake on the cylinder as opposed to making it case inducted. You clearly have the skills to do a case-induction intake.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

I really just wanted to try something new and see if i could get more power out of it or if it wouldnt make any difference. So far It seems about the same as it was before the reeds, except I had to richen the idle mix a bit. It is also super quiet compared to the non reed intake. As I mentioned before, I havent done any porting or cut any boost ports yet. By using the reeds and boost ports I was hoping I could get more efficient cylinder filling due to a longer intake duration and more power or at least a different performing power band. Its all just an experiment to see what it can do. Next project may be case induction.

Wow!

Very innovative.

Bet it's gonna rip!

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

Nice Job!

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

i don't see the point, the reason for the reeds in reed kits is to have extra ports Boost ports that open just like the transfers but won't blow back because the piston has closed the intake. Good try but your dedication and abilities outmatch your knowledge, good luck adding boost ports since you already have a giant hole for you intake piston port kit.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

Not really sure what your talking about brandon, I believe piston port and reed valve motors both have large holes for an intake. Until you get into case induction which is a little different. You should know that by adding reed valves you stop blowback essentially trapping the intake mix in the crank case. When you do this it allows to to increase intake duration by adding boost ports in the cylinder and holes in the piston. If done corectly this can increase cylinder volumetric effeciency. With some exaust port work, and the right pipe will help scavanging and cylinder filling even more. Which means more power. Like I said this is an experement for fun and to see if I can sqeeze a bit more out of 74cc. Maby I will fail completely but you never Know if you dont try.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

don't mind Brandon he's just the town buzzkill.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

although brandon may be a buzzkill, he is right about how your reeds will do nothing without modifying the piston. you need to put a giant window up top and raise your intake into a transfer port.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

your right.. All puch cylinders are piston port, the reed valve cylinders have different shaped intakes so they can have boost port and not compromise the rings/piston.

just saying you will get very little if anything with no boost ports, reeds may stop "blow back" but the intake flow does momentarily stop

Just because I'll say and do whatever I like in the moped community doesn't make me invalid. my moped is faster than 99% of them. Don't mind Harold he's just another guy trying to fit in.

my 7 port gila beat that:

oh you showoff.

Re: metra 80 reed valve Huh?

How does your 7 port gila run brandon. Did the extra ports give you a noticable gain.
