Alright, This is a pictoral guide to help future n00bs like me out. When I embark on a project, I really like to see and know what I'm getting into. And everyone likes pictures, so I took the time to lend a hand doing this.
This pictorial is how to install a Simonini pipe on a Motobecane 50V mobylette. It can be used as a reference for many other pipes on French/variated bikes I'm sure, but if you are using a different pipe, just use this as a reference. And also, MAKE SURE TO TEST FIT, AND DON'T DESTROY OLD PARTS IN PROCESS OF REMOVAL. IF SHIT GOES WRONG WITH THE NEW PARTS, THEN YOU'RE S.O.L.
What I got from Treats to begin the installation:
-The Pipe itself: includes the flange, springs and screw in piece.
-The black piece in the picture is a Tomos exhaust bracket. I can't find it on the eBay store, but send them an E-mail asking for the part.
-Exhaust gasket
-Not pictured is a dimebag full of jets. Not all of you are lucky enough to get storefront service, but order a lot of jets if you don't have a lot already!
ALSO, to save you a trip to the hardware store mid-install:
Get an 8mmx20 bolt and a matching nut and lock washer.
And a 6mmx40 1.0 pitch bolt + nut lock washer and maybe 5 or 6 washers!!!
Get a beer and put on some good tunes, and get to work.
The first thing I tackled was getting the old pipe off. I used a 1-1/4th inch wrench to remove the old pipe from the cylinder (If you don't have a huge wrench, try a larger adjustable wrench)
Be gentle, it may be in there very tight, Sometimes, if things don't budge, its best to maybe try to push it slightly tighter and then try to loosen it. Mind you, if you do screw up the threads on the cylinder it isn't going to be an easy repair to fix them! BE GENTLE! Once she's off, get a pick or a screwdriver and pry what's left of your old exhaust gasket out!
Next, remove the 10/11?mm bolt that holds the exhaust to the bracket just almost underneath the magneto/variator, slip the old pipe off and set her aside!
Something you may want to consider right now is removing the pedal chain! I forgot about it when I had the pipe on at the end, tried to back my bike up and the pedals clunked against the pipe! I removed it via the master link to save time as opposed to removing the rear wheel!
Next is optional, lets remove the nasty restrictor in the header of the pipe! Get a screwdriver a hammer and some pliers. Start bashing at the restrictor - it's one tiny tack weld holding it on, and it may take a while but it'll come off. The weld on mine was at the 10 o'clock position FYI.
Next lets get the flange and threaded coupler on. Get your exhaust gasket and slip it on into the hole. Slip the exhaust flange on the THREADED side of the pipe coupler. And install as so. (blurry pic sorry) REMEMBER, MAKE SURE NOT TO CROSS THREAD, DOUBLE CHECK YOUR WORK AS YOU GO.
Grab the pipe, bracket and your hardware. The 6mm bolt(along with the washers and lock washer) are going to attach this bracket to the spot where your old exhaust came off. You will notice the bracket has a threaded portion which your 6mm bolt will thread into. It's really difficult to explain how I set this up, but its very apparent if you take a look at it. Notice how in between the 2 sides of the bracket, the tomos mount will slide over one section; slip your 6mm bolt through the other side and thread it into the adapter, that's how it will work. Try to grab the details from the pictures. You will need to stack some washers along with the lock washer to get it to fit flush in this area. Make sure you use a lock washer. You don't want this pipe falling off at 40mph!
Here is the other side to help with my horrible wording.
Go get the pipe and slip her on the coupler you threaded into the cylinder. You will see that your bracket's bottom hole will line up with the hole on the pipe's bracket! Awesome! Get your 8MM hardware and bolt her up (bolt lock washer and nut). Refer to above pics if you get lost for whatever reason.
The only thing you haven't touched yet are the springs. This part is fun. Get some safety glasses if you care and a good pair of pliers (or vice grips). Slip them into the flange and then proceed to pull them (carefully) onto the little spikes on the pipe! I used my thigh to hold the bike in place while I wrestled with the pliers to stretch the springs. But I'm very scrawny, so you may not need to exert a lot of effort hah.
You now have completed installing your Simonini on your Motobecane! Take the carb off, upjet it, and start tuning!
