Proposed maxi build

I am going to pick up a maxi tomorrow and start my winter project

so heres what i am planning:

64cc polini

15mm bing

stuffed race crank

18/36 gearing

i looked through the wiki and read about all the pipes but im at a loss, i heard the boss is pretty good but its rather cheap and how good can a $60 pipe really be?

hows the simonini, homoet 6p and estoril (if de-restricted)

Re: Proposed maxi build

oh and a 50cc high compression head

Re: Proposed maxi build

Sounds good, I hope you chose to also include new bearings and seals, a must for any rebuild. The Boss pipe by report is an excellent priced power house. It has gone over 60mph on a highly modified Polini. 18 x 36 will be pretty tall gearing, assuming you've got a 1 speed. I'd say start with 16 x 45 or maybe 16 x 40, it will really make tuning easier, and with the super tall gearing, you might not make the power to pull the maximum RPMs. I really like the 6p on Polini, but I've never tried it with 15bing, I like 19mm PHBG and a 4 petal reed. My 15bing polini really responded well to an Estoril, I'd like to have tried it with a de-restricted one. Good luck!

Re: Proposed maxi build

I like the Boss. Not as good of low end as an Estoril but a little better top end. The Boss even looks kind of stock in the chrome model. I have a Tomos Estoril on my Puch Polini and I hit 57mph with 16 x 42 gearing, 18 inch wheels. I am running a larger carb than your proposed setup but the 15 bing will prove to make for better endurance engine in the long run.

Re: Proposed maxi build

i want this ped to be reliable for long trips and i know a lot of people have problems with the polini and say there not reliable but i think thats a lack of proper tuning

so for the 18/36 gearing i would probably want a low end pipe? or?

i may end up with 16/36 but not sure yet i want to be in the low or mid 50's and i know its possible with these kits

Re: Proposed maxi build

i would think you would want a low end pipe. because with 18x36, you might not be able to get enough revs to get through the powerband of, say, a simonini. thats just my logic, though.

i would go with an estoril, derestricted.

Re: Proposed maxi build

The surface of the the place where you put the reedcage on isn't alway's 100% flat. I think you have heard the story's about the Polini being unreliable.

That's because it's not 100% flat. When you put the [aluminium) reedcage on and torque it. There wil be some deformation in the cylinder what makes the pistonring snap into the intake.

Re: Proposed maxi build

didn't the guy's from the creatures ride to south america witha polini.

Re: Proposed maxi build

all you have to do is flatten it out with a file. i mean, you're probably case matching anyway, its not hard. also use the gasket with a thin layer of RTV on each side and don't torque the bolts down hard. You just have to take a little extra care when assembling.

Re: Proposed maxi build

***VANILLA BLUNDER*** /

go estoril or your low end will suffer

Re: Proposed maxi build

i have heard about the intake surface not always being flat, what would be the best way to resolve this problem?

also im leaning towards the estoril (de-restricted)

Re: Proposed maxi build

Use liquid gasketmaker. And use some locktite on the bolts.

Now you don't have torque the bolts to much. And because of the locktite the bolts wil stay in place.

Re: Proposed maxi build

There is an other topic about the Polini here on mopedarmy. And there was a nice video in it to!

Ordering parts!!

i picked up the maxi today and am just getting ready to order the parts.

64cc polini

boss pipe

dmp stuffed crank

bearings n seals

gaskets

new engine studs

bing jets : 88,90,92

i already have a 15mm bing.

am i forgetting anything?

or should i get smaller jets?

Re: Ordering parts!!

if I were you, I'd get this

Re: Ordering parts!!

more jets,

estroil dude..

those are the best for 69cc or under

Re: Ordering parts!!

bigger jets I think!! start at 100 atleast!!

Re: Ordering parts!!

really? looking at the spread sheet i thought i would but under a 92 so i figured i would use that for break in.

i went with:

dmp stuffed crank

64cc polini

boss pipe

15mm bing

all new gaskets, seals, and bearings

case matched (of course)

and lots of other goodies XD

just waiting for that big box from treats to start putting it all together.

Re: Ordering parts!!

well yeah, i did the same thing and started with an 80 and it was cutting out like crazy. then went to a 86 and it ran pretty good but weird. so for kicks i went to 100 and wow!! it was rich but you could tell thats how it was supposed to run. ended up a 96!! polinis like to run!! also check the video above and read what ovc said. i think its real important if you don't want to destroy your kit. put the intake on first and slide the piston through to make sure its not hanging up.

Re: Ordering parts!!

whats your set up?

Re: Ordering parts!!

It was polini, boss, and 15 bing with 96 jet!! I seized though because of that polini intake squeeze syndrome!! Then I broke my skirt when taking it off. So maybe I'm not a good source!! but it was running great with nice looking plug before it seized!! Just be real careful! those kits are fragile!!

started

i got the motor all back together with the new crank, no problem.

put the intake on the jug with rtv between all the metal surfaces, tightened it down. and the piston drops right threw! sweet!! looks like i got a good one.

now im trying to re-wire the dame thing....

Re: started

nice!!

Re: started

it started up with the 92 but when i gave it throttle it died so im guessing a need some bigger jets and there may also be an air leak or two!
