I understand how it is suppused to function.
Is it worth it?
I need some feedback from people who have used it.

Totally worth it, the 200 grams it takes off the crank will really wake up an otherwise stock engine, Plus being able to tune the wieght sets is great too, lets the vario stay in low gear longer making the acceleration great!
I <3 my Varplus!
we had to sand the shit out of the inner diameter of ours to even get it to fit over the stock variator shaft ..
I haven't heard anyone else have this problem. I love mine. Like crackstar said, it takes a whole lotta weight off the crank and gives the ability to change weights like in other performance variators so you can tune the bike to rev into it's power band before shifting.
It's a replacement of the mobile cheek plate in the stock variator with removable weights, letting you keep the rest of your stock variator stuffs like your clutch function. go for it. it's reasonably priced and awesome.
Yeah I understand the concept.
I was wondering more of reliability, ease of tuning, fitment etc.
Does it go with a 3 or 4 ball variator?
Maybe that is the issue, which variator do/did you have?
i posted a review on it a while back.
its good for an upgrade in the tranny on a moby. Any french tuner will tell u its all about tuning the transmissions on these bike to see real power from them.
its inexpensive, works great, is tunable, and lets you keep your starter clutch, its perfect for a mildly tuned moby or kitted av7.
the only issue with them is that they do wear out after a while and the rollers begin to stick, but for like $70 it will last at least a year.
worth it!
Where can I find that review?
I would love to read it.
Just prepare to do battle with your old variator to get it on, totally awesome upgrade though.

search function is great, anything Ellitot reviews has the part name and the word review in it.
yeah i spelled the name wrong tho its variplus not varioplus.... o well.
I just reread that review and its right on still, the only thing i'd add is that it wears out in about a year or so and on some ppls setups with certain belts it will hit the pulley under full variation, but it doesn't really matter cuz it wears a groove out in the aluminum and fixes itself.
If you have an av10 spring the variator will actually hit part of the spring and sparks will fly everywhere.
it goes with the 3 or 4 ball variator.. it doesnt matter. if you understand how it works then you know it replaces the stock sliding cheek... so you're just gonna ditch the 3/4 ball retainer anyways and replace it with this thing... which is a 6 roller setup, w/ 3 different roller weights.
i find removing/cracking the variator to be very easy, which makes tuning very easy. as long as youve got a torch (usually only needed on virgin variators), a vice, and some big channel locks, you can disassemble a variator in 5 minutes. less. i dont care what anyone says. if you've already got your variator _removal_ game down, then you're good to go.
elliot, what about your varplus wore out? I can see the rollers wearing out cause 2/3rds of them are hollow... but hasn't happened to me yet. im not running mine on a crazy fast moby setup like you probably are, so perhaps thats why im not seeing any degradation. just curious, though, so i know what to look for... this is the first ive heard of anything wearing out.
that being said, i did have to sand the flat sides of the rollers down just cause the molding was a little shitty. once theyre flat and smooth, though, its all good.
i love sparks.
oh and paulvolio- this works with 3 or 4 ball setup. it replaces that part all together.
cool
Thanks for the input.
I just put a sha 14.14 on the poor mans fast moby and top end rocks - 45 mph without tucking about 55 fully tucked feet on the floorboards.
But the acceleration until it fully variates is slowww.
and does anyone know if treats has aany motobecane pullers?
paul, you can get one at quarterkick.com. i also have one. and i also think im finally going to get the variplus as well.
cool
I was hoping to get them from the same place.
Ordering online is foriegn turf to me, I am going to do work for someone and I told them I need some stuff online.
If I knew you were getting a variator upgrade I would have been more agressive with your port job!
yeah its true, they do wear out after a while. mine put up a good fight for a long time before i went vario-top. but they again i blew that out fast too. do to my size and riding style i am pretty hard on moby trannies.
if this is seriously a question of worth, the answer is yes, yes, yes. truth be told i actually MISSED the great smooth feeling of the varplus over the variotop and clutch pulley.
get it.
paul, if you want i can order two.
i guess im not understanding what, exactly, wears out on this. can anyone explain?
i'll post a pic tomorrow of a beat ass variplus.
Jaym I would appreciate that a lot. It would be safer then telling someone where and what to get and end up with the wrong thing.
And yea what does wear out? The aluminum cheek where the weights travel?
Usually somthing for a moby so cheap is too good to be true!
I hope it doesnt shoot out the weights.
Imagine a variotop weight castration!
Everytime I take a high speed run I worry about getting a ball to the nuts!
I know it probably wont happen but imagine how much it would suck explaining that to a doctor.
yea... im waiting to see what exactly about the varplus wears out. on the contrary, paul, i _hope_ its the weights that wear out. at the very least, something clever can be made to fit the bill (im sure roller bearings of our necessary size/weight can be found at mcmaster carr or other bearing source, or mcguyvered). but now with malossi direct, i wouldnt be surprised if we can get roller weight sets for like 20 bucks shipped to your door. well maybe not that cheap, but cheap enough!
and then again i cant see a machined aluminum sliding cheek wearing out very fast...
well on mine, every once in a while it would kiss my pulley, so theres like some scraping on it, not to mention, after a while of abuse, it can start to stick from things like, getting loose and jamming up a little.
it still ripped hard until the day i sold it. it had its battle scars but im really not sure how much longer it had in it. i dont know how much more specific i can be, but i will say that you could just tell it had a lot of miles on it, and that the rollers had seen better days, probably the ramps too.
eh, elliot will post some pics i guess. you'll see
it would be so much better if you could just get rid of the centrifugal clutch part and just have the variator
the solo has no shoe clutch in it its just the variator which makes it very simple it has a stop so the engine only goes so far and the belt can slip at idle
to start it its just a lever that pushes on the clutch to squeeze the belt
if you can get a moby clutch to work like that it would be so much better
What would it take to do it?
Other than the solo parts?
Isnt that how some batavuses are too?
bump
bump?
oh yeah for the pics of a worn out varplus.
ps, these are, like, $45 shipped if you order them from malossidirect today during the sale.
