weirdest polini problem ever

this bike has a freshly broken in kit, ran awesome until suddenly it began violently four stroking and will only go 15 mph

stuff i checked out:

carb- perfectly functional 15 bing with a 90 jet, swapped on a 12 bing with same results.

pipe - estoril

electronics - near fully advanced timing with perfect beautiful blue spark, brand new condenser, adjusted points in both directions with no improvement.

downjetting drastically improves 4 stroking slightly and gets up to 20 mph. not the solution..

any suggestions? faulty reeds?

When this happened to me, the jet in my carb somehow came loose and was letting in too much gas. But apparently you have tried different jets all together so that cant be it.

flywheel has slipped on taper and woodruff key is sheared.

check it.

very very likely. also check those reeds.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

I think Harold is on the right track

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

yeah manually check the timing and check the reeds. the only other thing i could think of off the top of my head would be a massive clutch side seal failure.

but i'm thinking electrical or reeds are the culperit.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

woodruff is fine! that was my first thing checked.

engine is freshly rebuilt and no trans fluid in the chamber. wouldnt a seal failure cause lean burn and not overly richness?

will swap out reeds i have a spare set, somewhere..

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

If you can't find your stock reeds, let me know, I'll mail you a set Peter.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

I had the same problem on a peugeot it was the reeds.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

If it were a stock bike i would say check for a clogged exhaust port and or pipe, that would rich it up quick like.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

dont use mine you dick!

i miss you peter, dont forget to feed the gibbon's for me!

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

naw a massive seal leak on the tranny side would cause alot of tranny fluid to enter the combustion chamber that was basically oil so yeah it would be leaner gas to air ratio but the oil would not ignite and cause a 4 stoking effect and loss of power.

but i think its probably the reeds.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

When the clutch side seal went out on my vespa scooter it would idle fine, but as soon as I would give it gas it would die... Had lots o gas in my tranny after that...

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

reed failure on a brand new kit... even though they appear to be fine could they have flaws?

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

you could also be getting an arch from your points(happend to me). That causes your bike to sputter and loss of power.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

did u check the reeds? i assume so if they look good there is nothing wrong.

double check the electrical, and go back in time and re assess what happened and the circumstances around the breakdown thats often the answer.

this guy came into 77 a while back and his new tomos (still under warranty) was super sluggish, he said it just was getting slower and slower each day. I talked to him for a while longer and he admitted to using premix and the oil injector because he heard that the injectors failed sometimes.

The 1st thing i swapped out was the pipe and it solved his problems. He had a clogged cat converter because of the extra premix oil, but we would have spent a long time cleaning the carb and checking for leaks or compression issue and such if I didn't know that bit of information about the premix and injector. Because why would a new bike have a clogged pipe?

sry for story time

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

i will check his estoril, there is a dent in the bottom from the kickstand and it formed a little hole, black goo leaked out onto my garage floor, it coud be plugged up in there.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

black goo adds 5mph, id pipe swap anyways

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

i fucking love black goo.

still need to swap the reeds. from my understanding this problem came suddenly, like a simple stall out at a stop light then restart to this problem.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

if your reeds appear fine, then they are fine! if they appear broken then they are broken. there are no hidden flaws in reads. it is not a tranny seal leak, it would not come on all of the sudden like you say it did.

Possibilities:

reeds broken

piston ring broken (yes you can run on a broken ring, but you will hardly move)

bad condenser (yea even if it is brand new)

there you go problem solved

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

When my clutch side seal blew it just blew when I was going 50 ish. Just happened. I think a seal could blow for sure if you are blastin and it wasn't seated correctly, old or defective...

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

if it was a clutch-side seal that blew you'd be putting out some serious thick blueish smoke out of the exhaust. 007 style.

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

i love the spy hunter bad trans seal custom moped

Re: weirdest polini problem ever

improper or faulty seal. but a seal will not just blow from too much raw power.
