Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

I soft seized my polini a few months back. this is a photo of the cylinder. i tried to polish out the fused metal from the piston ring. at least that's what i think it is. it is very very slightly raised in the cylinder. will this continue to cause more blow by and in turn more seizes? i hope this is reusable as long as i get a new piston.

make it smoooth and you should be fine. Both my polini's have been seized, one kinda, the other more abruptly. As long as nothing catches, it will work good.

Muriatic Acid dude

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

no shit huh? i didn't even think of that. are we sure that it will eat only the fused material and not the cylinder?

will not eat nik

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

are we sure that it is in fact nickel? have you done it before?

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

you can also use naval jelly/phosphoric acid. and having siezed a bike shouldn't increase your likelyhood you'll sieze again. in my experience mopeds are very forgiving.

also, i know this sounds like crazy bandit talk but you should try to salvage your old polini piston and rings. i've taken hard siezed (rings stuck in the grooves-piston scored as fuck) kits and completely saved them, got them running with good compression. sand the fuck out of the rings (as long as they are not snapped) and the piston and run it. i know it sounds like a terrible idea but i've seen it work well. its free try it. or if you really don't want to do that sell me your fucked rings and piston!

just get a new ring. $10 and done. Pistons can be fixed unless chunks are missing, but even still work alright.

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

thats fine. new rings.

before the ehaust port up near the head is what makes cylinders suck.

god i wish my kit wasent so badly fucked.

Its the intake port, that usually makes the polini go crazy :(

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

why dont you just run a hone through it briefly

or go to a local machine shop & have them look at it

I think the better you can repair it now the longer overall it will last

I have re used mildly dammaged pistons & had no problems as long as OD of the piston that rides in the cylinder is good

I actually took the side of the piston to the side of my 14 inch cutoff wheel while rotating the piston to re polish (sorta) the sides of it, came out great

take care

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

It's not nickel, it's a Nikasil lining. You don't want to hone it because you run a good chance of chipping the nikasil at the edge of a port. It is a good idea to "deglaze" the cylinder though, using maybe some light lubricant and scotch brite. You will know when you are done because the piston without a ring will fall right through.

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

Its been my experience that once siezed they are goosed, you can get them running again but its just a matter of time before they sieze again, honing is a definate no-no.. the nickasil is only microns thick and once gone youre down to aluminium.

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

some people say polinis are faster after a good seize. use acid and light sanding to get the aluminum off the nikasil, sand and file the piston until the ring is free and there are no highspots.

the kit will be fine and have that signature seized polini sound.

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

So thats what that sound is....hahaha

***VANILLA BLUNDER*** /

your polini isnt broken in until you have seized it

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

my polini seized hard and i saved it, I also made the exhaust port like a skate ramp and ported the fuck out of my cylinder so i don't necessarily believe u can "chip" the nickasil to an adverse effect.

most reliable cylinder ever after that, and runs cold.

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

there were a couple small chips on the nikasil of my malossi motobecane kit and its fine.

Re: Re-Using Polini Soft Seize

Elliot, do you have a picture of you exaust port?
