65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

Today i got around to replace my stock 49cc setup with a 65cc Metrakit i purchased from Treats store this week for my 78 puch maxi.. Before I went ahead and installed it, I lubed up the cylinder with some 2 stroke oil and wanted to verfiy the fitment of the piston with the cylinder. Without any rings on the piston, I couldn't get the piston much further then the initial lip of the cylinder. Just to verify the tightness, I was able to push the old 49cc piston through the original cylinder just fine.

I figured that because it's brand new maybe the fit gets a little better with some break-in, so I contnued with the job and figured with some pressure, I could get the piston to fit into the cylinder. I was wrong and now I"m left with an etched cylinder and a not so happy piston.

Before I go out and purchase another kit and start over, thinking that this kit just might be a fluke, has anyone else experienced this lately? I tried searching and didn't come up with anything. I'm a noob to mopeds, but not to wrenching on vehicles.. Any insight is appreciated.

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

maybe they gave you an oversized piston?

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

are you trying to put new piston in the old cyl?

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

no.. sorry if my writing is confusing. i'm trying to put the new piston in the new cylinder.

i was just testing to see what normal tightness is by pushing the old piston through the old cylinder.

ps. tad faded.

65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

what size is the oversized one? i could measure mine i guess..

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

idk. they make a couple oversized sizes. theyre for cylinders that have been seized and rebored to a slightly larger size. usually a few thousands of an inch larger.

65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

no worries.. i pulled them inside and measure them. the cylinder and the piston seem about the same size, but i still can't push the piston all the way into the cylinder unless i get a BFH.. oh well, guess i need to get another one and try again.

anybody have one for sale?

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

i ordered one from treats to but mine seems to fit good. what carb and pipe are you planning on running? also what airfilter?

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

BFH???

big fucking hammer??

hahahaha

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

i have a 15mm bing carb with the 82 jet, a treats air filter intake, and an exhaust i picked up at 1977 mopeds at lunchtime one day that's not a biturbo.. i also put on a 15 spoke sprocket.

i'm hoping the metrakit will be the final piece of my puzzle of my quest to get to Chabot Science Center from my pad in East Oakland on my maxi.

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

I have a used one that I bought a few years ago and a new one I bought about a month ago. I don't know how many miles are on the used one,

Old metrakit (used):

Cylinder 43.58mm

Piston 43.25mm

New Metrakit (new):

Cylinder 43.50mm

Piston 43.28mm

The piston crown on the new one says 43.450

What does yours say? Maybe something's out of tolerance, I can drop the piston through the cyl with no rings. The quality on the newer Metrakit doesn't seem as good.

Not trying to jack your thread here, but what's with cutouts in the sides of the old piston? ^Look at the pic^

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

assumed BFH is a common term on any forum where there's an engine involved. :)

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

If you can find a straight pipe with a flange that fits, you could turn that Metrakit into a BFH.

Of course you leave fin marks on the parts you're trying to coerce into position...

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

mine's like the one on the right and it says 43,450 on it..

i could take it to a machine shop i use for my cars to get it to work, but it's cheaper overall to just get a new one i'm sure..

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

"If you can find a straight pipe with a flange that fits, you could turn that Metrakit into a BFH."

good idea. i think that what it's about worth to me at the moment..

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

it's ok if you scratched it a bit, it will hone out, metrakits are cool that way, they are iron bore, not nikasil or chrome walled aluminum like most others, so you can hone it and bore it all you want if the walls get damaged. you just need the right size piston and run a brake hone in there with some oil. I think it must have come with the wrong/mismatched piston, email treats, he will take care of it i'm sure.

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

what is BFH?

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

BFH = Big Fucking Hammer

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

It came in the cylinder right?

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

nope.. the piston came in a separate plastic bag.

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

Just email Benji. he'll send you the right piston if he has it. If not, he'll probably just take the kits back and give you a refund. Dude is the man.

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

did you make sure the ring land (little pin in the ring groove) is lined up?

i think that is too big of a piston by .05mm

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

Sounds like it doesn't even fit without rings... Wrong piston...

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

My 65cc Metrakit is right here on my desk...the piston slides through no problems...rings also seem to fit into the piston perfectly.

I'd say wrong piston dooder!

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

Oh, and my piston came in the cylinder...not in a bag

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

cool.. thanks for info guys. at this point, i need more then the piston because i damaged the cylinder case in the process of putting pressure on it tying to get the piton in place.

contacted treats this morning. they've been righteous with me so far, so i'm sure it'll all work out.

ps. this forum rules. danke.

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

Take a pic of the damage. You didn't try to hammer it down in there did you?

Re: 65cc Metrakit Piston Fitment?

k, will do when i get home.. i didn't use a hammer, but i did use a rubber mallet and a rag to gently tap it in place. gave up when it stopped budging. pretty much jammed the piston in the cylinder. after pulling the cylinder case off, i had to tap the piston out of the cylinder since it was pretty much wedged in.

oh well, sometimes you learn best from your mistakes. time to order up a new one.
