I have gotten a lot of calls and emails about how to mount super low puch long seat. Heres how. Credit this idea to Nathan Kiehn.
About two inches
Mark with sharpie
thats pretty damn sexy. good idea mang. someone who is better at it than me should wiki this, for sure.
how many performances does this add Rafter?
You can also do the same, but mount to the shock bolts instead of hammering into a horizontal.
rafter ur seat tube weld is gonna snap forcing it down like that on that type of aftermarket maxi seat man!!!!, it happened to mine after a few months.
i can't tell how far away the bent tabs are from the frame but it looks like 1" from the pics, i'd put a spacer in there to make it perf.
awesome step by step pics man, also good idea.
Elliot: Five seats mounted like this have not broken seat posts yet in a year. But we do not ride like you do. You put a beatdown on your stuff. It could totally happen at any min though.
The last pic shows what it looks like done. But when you ride it for a while it gets lower. The tabs bend in from the weight of your butt.
Mounting to the shocks would work but then you could see the mounts. I don't care for it.
David: This mod adds + one performance point for looks and none for speed.
more aerodynamic
Or you can just completely cut it off and keep your rear rack.... Just mount it at the front and rest the back on the rack... Did that on my first maxi like 8 years ago and Kelly K is still riding it that way...
This is the way to go without a rear rack though. Very innovative dude!
Chris
why my moped breaks performance rafters?
i've personally mounted 2 seats just like that and none of them have broken yet
yayy
do you have to upjet?
Nice work with the pictures. It's not often we see tutorials on stuff that use 6 words to describe what's happening but still make perfect sense.
I'll wiki it if you want me to and you don't mind me uploading your photos.
Where can i buy a new or used seat like this? I want one like this, or one that is close to this with the gold Puch logo on the back. I will post an ad on the buy sell forum, but just wanted to see where all the aftermarket seats are be sold from and also if there is a used one for sale somewhere.
treats dude. some other guy was selling them too
look on ebay
great post. pics are so much easier to understand than convoluted write-ups with poor grammar.
That's a good way to do it for those people that don't have access to a welder. Nice work...and good job posting pictures.
I agree with elliot. I would think the seat post would snap when forced down like that, but if it works....go for it.
Here is how I did one recently
I've found that it is ideal to have the the bracket be about 1-1/8" tall. That keeps the seat nice and level and doesn't put any pressure on the post.
I then marked the holes from the bottom of the fender...removed the seat....drilled them out....put the seat back on....and bolted it down.
One more picture of it on the bike
You could probaby leave the tabs a little longer and bend them over pre welding. Would give you more weld/surface area for strength.
i always just cut the mounting thing off the newspaper rack and weld it to the seat pan
awesome article ! going to pick one of these seats up now. but where could i find a tail light that small?
man i wish there was a song celebrating seat mods...
ms. new booty might work...
i just kept the tabs vertical and then drilled horizontally through my rear maxi feder and ran a bolt through it. Thats the best way to do it imo besides hacking and welding a fabricated bracket.
Putting them horizontal like that is just going to prolong snappage for a little bit longer but they'll probably still fail especially if you're goin' dubs
i don't see how they will snap seeing as though there resting on the bolt it self taking tension off the bends. this mod is solid as it get's without welding.
cheeks, most people want their moped to look good as well as ride well. your way sounds super ugly.
also, there's been many years and many miles, including lots of two up riding, on more than a few seats mounted this way.
try it your self before saying it won't work, eh?
derek, you can buy those little taillights at auto parts stores like kragen and autozone, and i think treats or 77 has them, too.
Now how do I do this with my maxi 1.5 seat.
Thanks for the writeup! I wanna do this to my new maxi but I think I'll put a rubber spacer between the frame and seat mount so it doesn't scratch!
