Im Looking at getting an express and was wondering what the performance options are for them without spending hundreds on a kit.

not too many bolt ons. you can buy a slip on chamber or hack and weld a pipe, make your own intake manifold adapter with a 19mm flange and run a bigger dellortho carb, round out the square exhaust port to match stock pipe, dremel out lip on stock intake mani, mill the head for greater compression ratio, if yours has a varaitor you can extend the path for the weights and play with different weights...My express has a Malossi 70cc topend kit, homemade Jamarcol pipe, larger intake manifold, Iridium Plug, and some port work...only does mid 30's because of the stock carb not jetted right for kit. It was faster with modified 50cc topend and stock pipe that carb could handle. I'd recommend making sure it runs great and then play around with some of the do it your self stuff like dremeling out the intake manifold for flow and rounding the exhaust port to match pipe. It'll accelerate much better and have a some more top end if you know what your doing on that exhaust port
alright thanks. its not running but complete but really cheap where i thought it could be fun to putz with over winter to try and get it running
expresses are fun. my 80 does about 27 - 30, im 6'5'' and 310. it hates me off the line and uphill but she gets there.
Let me know if you need some parts, I have a '80 blue one I am parting out.
thanks I am flip flopping on whether I should get it. OH! I have a pa50II and it kinda sucks to work on the engine. Is the express the same or is it easier to get at? I.E. do I need to take apart everything to get at the carb?
not as bad to work on. you should save your money and focus on the hobbit though, way more potential. a lot of people make this mistake when they get into mopeds, better to have one or two rad bikes than 5 or 10 shitty bikes.
I do not have 10 expresses
i've only got 3.. and they all run.
:D

but we cant pass up those deals!!! we dont want to do it on purpose! promise.
ha i understand what your saying about quality over quantity, which is why i spent money on some parts for my hobbit instead of going towards a maxi (hopefully i'll find one in the spring). conversextime may want to pimp out his moped but i am just aiming for 30 and will be happy with that. it runs great and starts right up i just need to get the driven face and variator back up to par. took awhile and a lot of WD40 but i finally got the rear driven face moving again. the express just seems like a good deal as long as its not seized but i've got to see it first.
Yeah, Gram is right. I am in the process of trying to go from quantity to quality as we speak, but them deals just keep popping up. Plus my buddy that owns the local scooter shop has this fenced in yard round back I call "MoPurgatory" which is full of bikes people either dropped off and never came back for or he did the repairs and they don't want to pay for them. Oh man, the deals he has given me out of there.
My $.02 is expresses are way fun to work on, easy as pie and not a bad first bike to learn the ropes on. Never gonna be a speed demon but with a little love and some creativity, you can get to the low forties. Plus express kits are like the cheapiest cheapies on earth. I think the 64cc CharMo kit is like 80 bucks.
"round out the square exhaust port to match stock pipe,"
I heard this bit of advice when I first got my 1980 Express, so I popped the pipe off first thing to take a look at the square port.
No square port, full round. No dremel marks - original iron finish. I've had that cylinder completely apart, and, well, it's still round.
Could it be that only the '78s and '79s have restricted exhaust ports?

Magnus, 6'5" 310#, and your express gets you 27-30 mph?
My Express gets 6'3" 190# me up to 27-30 mph! Eventually.
It seems like we just need the engine to rev higher - pushing against wind resistance from 30 to 35 doesn't take anywhere near the extra power (and need for a performance kit) that pushing from 40 to 45 does.
So, what's a reliable way to increase revs? Lightening the engine's rotating mass, perhaps?
