Is this a soft seize?

So I have have been riding a new metra65 kit, It has about 200 miles on it so it should be pretty close to broken in. I just started taking it WOP and to my satisfaction it has a great brown plug chop and has been jetted so it four strokes very lightly at WOP. twice now, once today and once a few days ago, while riding WOP at probably high forties (which is pretty fast for the 16:45 gearing) the engine seems like it quits four stroking, revs up even higher and sounds like its going to explode. when that happens, I throw in my choke lever and start feathering it (as a test) and the bike does not start cutting out as it should. getting scared I let out from WOP a little and keep feathering the choke as to make sure that I don't soft seize. Then as I'm slowing down I get a loud BRRRRRSZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZPPPP sound and the engine dies as I slow down enough and come to a stop. Is this a soft seize? I have never had one before. Or Is the feathering of the choke causing this to happen? I'm just puzzled because I generally four stroke and have rich plug chops, and ride WOP in the cold of the night, and this happens when it is about 30 degrees warmer.

Re: Is this a soft seize?

I guess I should add that after both times I let my bike chill for a minute or two, then start it and it runs normally...

open up and find out!!

Re: Is this a soft seize?

Running leanmost likely even with the good plug chop, almost a soft seize. You'll know pretty distinctly when it soft seizes.

Maybe break it in longer or check the parts.

Re: Is this a soft seize?

Lee's right, but that sounds like the textbook definition of a softseize.

i maintain that you can't tune a kit with plug chops. I stopped looking at my plugs a long time ago.

Are you running a SHA?

Re: Is this a soft seize?

Nah, Im running an amal. I four stroke through most of the progression of the throttle. The only time I don't is when I am accelerating, then the bike "catches up" to the throttle position, and I start four stroking again. This happens at full throttle too, but every once in a while, I dont hit that ceiling and four stroke, I just keep revving up and up until I either freak out and back off early enough, or this happens.

Re: Is this a soft seize?

Ohhhh boy I just opened It up, the cylinder seems ok, the piston has alot of burned carbon on the top, and along one side of the piston there are a bunch of streaks running down it. I assume this is a soft seize? The rings seem perfectly in tact. what do I do now? just slap it back together and keep riding it? upjet?

Re: Is this a soft seize?

Upon further inspection, all of the streaks line up with the exhaust port on the cylinder, and most of the carbon is built up on this side of the piston head as well. I am running all three metal gaskets, should I take away some to advance the exahaust timing? or is this Irrelevant?

running to hot. chamfer your exhaust port. in fact chamfer all ports. assemble carefully. it is possible to run rich with air leaks.

did you put any sealant between the three metal gaskets? if not, then you had a leak for sure.

Re: Is this a soft seize?

no, I didn't use sealant. they all came stuck together, I just threw them on together. Oh bother. Hopefully that is it and I can fix the problem. Luckily performance seems to be uneffected.

Re: Is this a soft seize?

Don't peel the gasket stack apart. It is supposed to be that way, use them all.

Re: Is this a soft seize?

I'm guessing you are using a bing? I have soft seized several metra 65 kits when using the old bing, it just isn't enough carb. Get a 19mm Dellorto if you haven't already.

Re: Is this a soft seize?

he said amal.

Re: Is this a soft seize?

if your back wheel didn't lock up i am pretty sure its not a soft seize

4000 miles on mine with a bing, i couldnt seize that thing if my life depended on it, i put a pipe on it and never changes jets and it ran perfect, until i put a 16 dell on it.

Re: Is this a soft seize?

Perhaps it wasn't an all out soft seize, If that makes your wheel lock up. Perhaps I saved it just in time by throwing the choke on. Regardless, It is still running to hot, I appreciate all input so far and any further input to get this thing running cooler. Additional information:

puch maxi E50

15mm amal

biturbo pipe

NGK BH7S spark plug

Re: Is this a soft seize?

....back wheel locking up is a hard seize dude.
