check your compression.
try running it with the head gasket that comes with the metra.
some of those 7occ heads i had a bit of trouble with - the ones milled totally flat. There weree other ones with a ring, i swapped mine out on my metra to the ring one and it ran better.
make sure you have the head on right, with the decomp hole on the bottom, as well as the gasket the same way.

I've been running mine no problem. Inspect the head gasket regularly and make sure it's tight and you should be ready to go.
there is a small hole just under the cylinder (MK) that if it doesnt get plugged with the gasket/head creates a massive air leak, check that first
Yeah. Those High comp heads are all casted with the tab to cover this hole on the side instead of the true bottom of the head, if that makes sense... If you put the head on to match the fins, the hole that goes right into the exhaust port doesn't get covered....
Anyone know why there is a hole there in the first place? Makes no sense to me since you always cover it with the head anyhow...
Old Euro puch maxi's had a decompression valve in the head similar to motobecane or vespa to make it eaiser to start. They quickly nixed the design, but didn't change the tooling for the stock cylinders, simply capping it with a new head with no decomp, and apparently kit mgf's also put them in so you can run with a decompression head if you so chose.

what do people use to plug the hole? jb weld? epoxy?
my head covers it, but im sure JB weld would do the trick
