severe blowback

Gunther McCilicutty /

So I finally realize that my rings are bad. There is so much blowback that the crank is black and oily.

How much blowback is normal? I assume that new rings are in order.

Re: severe blowback

i've pulled arart cylinders with 1000+ miles that were carefully broken in over about 300 miles and there was no blowback. you should get new rings, they're cheap and easy to install.

Re: severe blowback

It's not strange that the crank is oily. The crank is exposed to the mixture on the intake stroke. If your piston has burn marks past the rings, then you have bad blow by (blow back is gas coming back out of the intake). I believe if your crank was black and burnt looking, then you would have a problem.

Re: severe blowback

the worst is when you get some blowby past the sphincter...

naw..the worst is being on the other end of that particular blow by...think about it.

Re: severe blowback

ooh yeah, good call. but usually there's a good layer of pants blocking. just make sure you're not on a really nice couch.
