Fast but sputtering

Things are settling on my newly rebuilt peugeot. I've ridden it around quite a bit over the last two days since it came back to life.

Last night I started getting a sputtering. It still went fast, but here and there it would sputter at full throttle, like it was gasping or something. At the same time I noticed that, it stopped idling at the setting I originally had the idle screw at (barely in at all). I gave it some good ole 'fake idle' (levenberg) with a turn of the idle screw, and its fine now..

but whats with the sputtering?

I'm also not confident as to whether Im too advanced or retarded. Im wondering about jetting too. Im afraid to downjet, cause this thing revs the fuck out and I havent had my seizing cherry popped yet, and am hoping to postpone that magical experience as long as possible.

However, the plug is a darker brown than coffee w/cream.

So given that this is a freshly-put-back-together bike, I figure things are settling in and shifting a bit.

Thoughts?

its electrical. don't let it get worse.

my puch did this and eventually soft seized because my electrical got so bad. Nasty orange spark. Make sure points, condenser and all associated items are in tip-top shape. Once thats done, re-jet accordingly.

sometimes I use choke and air filter for quick jet assessments.

if a little choke makes the bike run better, you might need to upjet.

if loosening or taking off the air filter makes it run better, you might need to downjet.

i even have 5 small holes drilled in my bravo airbox, which I cover or uncover with duct tape for minor adjustments.

New condenser, brand new ignition/high tension coil. Does it necessarily point to a fault in the actual electrical hardware?

I had just played with the timing. I think I just didn't notice it at first, but I get the feeling it started as a direct result of that...

I just cleaned my carburetor, and checked the fuel flow.. carb is clean and the fuel flowed very freely all over the sidewalk in front of my house when I take the line off the carb.

My ht coil is brand new, as is my condenser. I've tried with two different b8hs plugs. Doing the same thing after each change.

Is there a chance a brand new condenser or brand new ignition coil could have fucked up so soon?

So I need to rewire most likely.. brand spanking new condenser and ht coil, I refuse to believe they screwed up.

factories do make mistakes... I had a brand new internal HT coil from 50cc.nl that didn't work, but then I tried a used one and it was fine... not saying that this is you, but sill possible

Couldn't a bad ground or a frayed wire be responsible for the arcing? Somewhere along the coil-points-condenser circuit?

Im going to try rewiring before I blame my new electrical hardware.

Its hell getting in to work and sitting here thinking about mopeds for 8 hours!!!!!!! Then when I get home its a race against the sun to get my shit done before its too dark to see.

bad grounds are BAD!

Rewire with good, clean wire and solid grounds, then check it all out. You should be fine.

Don't re-wire....well do, but just don't pull pull out your wires and thread new stuff yet. Just test it all with the new wiring BEFORE you thread it through the bike.

Poppin that sunnuva bitch off the second I get home.

Might buy fresh wires on my way home. The ones Im using are very old and the insulation is a bit on the brittle side.

The update:

Cleaned up wiring, including lighting.

My wiring series goes: Ignition coil --> Points -->[split]--> One to ground, one to condenser.

Points are still arcing good. I even switched out to another brand new condenser, no change.

Can someone describe a simple peugeot ignition set-up including grounds? Is parallel wiring or series wiring better?

NOTE: I'm using that treats peugeot/puch internal ignition coil that doesnt need a seperate HT coil.

I'm back to feeling clueless about this, when two weeks ago I wired it up and was on top of the world, heh.

I rewired everything correctly... some of my wires I think were corroded enough to not have much conductivity.. or somesing...

But as for dual condensers.. absolutely zero arcing, something neither of the brand new condensers could do on their own.

Pretty sure its my mostly timing, but I lost some low and and acceleration... but sweet jesus I was smoking everything on the road with the high end.

Update:

Saturday I advanced the timing slightly. It ran crappy then heat seized.. I thought it was legit, will definitely do a more thorough test around the block the next time I experiment with timing!

I used the method where I make a mark of where the flywheel was at at TDC, then rotated it just a couple of millimeters to the right. No more than 2mms. Wasnt expecting it to be so sensitive. I'll be moving it a fraction of a mm from now on when Im messing with it.

The bike became unseized and ran like shit on my way to the HSBG festival, then wouldnt start up when I went to leave hours later. Yayyyy girlfriend with a zip car.

FYI, Scions fit mopeds just fine.
