That's what I was thinking, but wasn't sure... Is it important to set the points gap a little tighter if you advance the timing? I believe that I read one of elliot's posts and he said to make the points gap tighter if you are advancing the timing...
I usually set the points to factory spec and adjust the timing by rotating the stator. But you can get even finer adjustment by setting the point gap a little tighter.

Has anyone advanced the timing on a stock Puch 50cc? Does it make a difference? Good or Bad?
sometimes it improves it, sometimes it seems to do nothing. I've never had an adverse effect from advancing the timing all the way.
Not even on a kitted motor? How the fuck are you doing by the way you big stud?
It helps on kitted motors, at least it never hurts. The last polini engine I built i advanced it all the way right away and haven't messed with it since.
Oh, and I'm doing awesomely, despite being broke as shit. I hate recessions, no one buys statues.
I loosened up the screws but could not turn it....do I need to take off the bell?

Hey I have had the EXACT same problem while advancing my timing... I loosen the screws and it just doesn't go anywhere.
For some reason methinks that the stator plate can kind of get "stuck" i guess in one position.. If you keep trying, maybe give the engine a few taps from a rubber mallet.. it SHOULD eventually want to move.
It honestly seems like random luck when it has moved for me, but once it does it moves really easily. Put a screwdriver in that little notch below one of the holes, then rotate the flywheel until it hits the screwdriver... put pressure on both in the direction you want it to move and it should work eventually.
I will give it a try...I was drunk when I had the cover off and restrained myself enough so I did not mess it up. I will try that again sober.
Did this yesterday on my unkitted e50 (exactly the way Nils described).
It seemed to give a bit more low end pep. Wasn't sure if I would have to worry about hotter temps but had a nice looking plug chop.
