I'm only a couple months into mopeds, I don't know much...but i'm learning. Finally got my moped up and running, everything works pretty well except that the variator slips.
Now I'm thinking I want to give it some bigger cahones...any suggestions?

You dont have a variator, the 7s have a single speed clutch. As far as upgrades go there isnt a whole lot besides a kit and a carb upgrade, if you can find a kit. The engine doesnt have room to swing so you cant change to a variator.
all of that is true. you can do some port work to it in lieu of trying to find one of the elusive av7 kits. there is work involved and a good amount of risk if you arent patient. they can be made to go fast, even with the clutch instead of the variator. i ran a dimoby clutch on my av7 and the thing would fly.
Benji has 50cc AV7 kits, get one of those. Then make an intake so you can put a big carb on there. Since the motor isnt going to variate get weldy with basically any performance pipe.
oooo I have a soft spot for 7's, such a fun ride. yep they all have good advice. don't forget a new belt. and drag bars.
Thanks guys!
I wasn't even sure where to start.
I bought it for $25 beat up and not running and now it's coming together.
thanks again.
oh and, do you have any suggestions for finding a dimoby clutch?
I think you misunderstood. There are two versions of a clutch setup on the motobecane motors; the variated version and the dimoby clutch version. All model 7's run the dimoby clutch because the engine is in a fixed position and cannot use a variator. Your model 7 already has the dimoby clutch.
ah, got it. so i just need to fix the one i have :P
thanks
michael- congratulations on the running model 7! i'm sure you've already realized this, but there aren't that many of us out there.
if you absolutely need a new dimoby, you can pick one up on ebay here complete for $70, or check out handybikes.com for the different pieces and parts. before you do anything, though, make sure it's your clutch and not your drive belt that's slipping. i just replaced my drive belt and the difference is incredible-- and they're a lot cheaper than clutches.
do you know which model 7 you have (A, B or C)? mine's a model 7A (30mph version) and it runs about 34 bone stock on flats, when everything's tuned and the carb's clean. one of the great things about the model 7 is that the carb is so much easier to service than the giant gurtners on the model 50 bikes. i have a model 50, too, and i would rather clean the carb on my seven any day. i haven't made any performance mod's on my 7 yet, but i've been talking to the guys at motion left about doing some mild porting to pick up a few more mph. you should also be able to switch your carb for a dellorto, but the wiki only addresses the model 50 and you may end up needing a different intake for the 7. keep us posted as you upgrade that little blue beast, and keep her on the road-- they're getting rare!
Thanks man! It's a fun ride.
I finally got around to opening up the clutch, it's pretty ruff.
The person I bought it from treated it pretty bad and then left it in a garage for 10 years.
But I did take your advice and get a belt, probably get that on in a couple days.
Since I started this post I did a lot more searching and found a 70cc kit at mopedjunkyard and a 15mm intake at quarterkick - kits pretty procy - but eventually i'll get that on there
I'm not positive on the model, either 20 or 25 cause it has the small carb.
Engines kind of hectic, prior owner made a mess of "repairs".
We'll see, I'll keep everyone updated.
where is our update ?
You can do stuff, just a lot of customizing. I've attached a picture of mine. 70cc parmakit (raised to meet proper squish band), 19mm carb, custom 20 mm intake, malossi belt, custom homoet pipe, hobbitt forks. Takes some time and patience, but if you do it right, it turns out awesome. I still have some tuning to do when this Wisconsin weather gets consistently warmer.
You guys bumped an ancient thread. But - Moby 7 performance, yeah? Keep it coming, I would love to have one of these one day.
nice! im looking to kit my 7. i dont want to go as far as you did but, wonder if theres room under the covers for a phbg. i got too much nos brittany blue to be running without covers. circuit pipe+15mm w ported cylinder but im dyin to take it to the next. what size rear tire you running? i wasnt able to find a 16x2...
yo summerai whats the exhaust setup?
looks like a puch/tomos homo pipe. did you make a flange/spring mount or weldon a threadedcollar header bit????
Tomos homoet. Welded on back bracket and doppler ball joint on the front to thread into the cylinder. Also safety wired the ball joint to prevent loosening. I can post some closer pics sometime if you guys are interested.
summeri-I want to see the mounting on the pipe, non variated mobys still move around a bit on that spring right?
The engine still has some shake to it, yes. I'll try to get some photos up sometime soon.
yeah, id like to see that too. thats why i always feltthat that motor was more designed for a circuit pipe if any pipe. mine fuckin moves ALOT.
Dang! Thats the best looking 7 I've seen on here. Can I ask you about that seat set up? Whats going on there?
Had to make some custom brackets so it could open/close to allow me to fill the gas tank.
Hell yeah. I took off the stock seat the other night and just took it for a spin around the block sitting on the tank and have to say that it felt way more fun that way. Can i bother to ask what seat you bought for it? I figured you had some sort of custom bracket set up and am gonna tinker with my own. Nice one!
I bought the seat from a guy on ebay and he just had it listed as a general motobecane seat, so I'm not sure what model it's from. I used two small L shaped brackets from the hardware store. Took off the chrome trim on the tank and used the holes on the tank that were used to connect that. Then I connected the other end of the bracket to the holes on the seat bracket that came with it. Used nylon lock nuts tightened down snug so it could open and close to allow me to fill the tank with gas. I don't have any pictures up close and the one I posted is the best one. Hope this helps!
Sweet deal, thanks for that. Im going to have shop around for a seat when I have a chance. I'll post a photo when I make the upgrade. Once again, fun looking ride you have there.
just in case you guys didn't know chad burke has made a puller for the 7 engine mounts. i've been using one for awhile, get ahold of him if you need to swap them out.
I need that puller.........
