My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

Hey guys,

I've been cruising through the archives trying to find as much information as I can on the subject. Right now I'm running a '77 puch, 1.5hp. I've got a stock e50, hi flow filter, 72 jet in a bing 14mm. My bing leaks (gaskets on route). I've got a proma gp pipe. I can hit 35mph (I think) on flat.

Thats not good enough. I want to be in the 45mph area.

I'm thinking I'm ready for my first kit. I looked around and t he best thing for me would be the metrakit 65cc. Too bad its gone. I could go for the 50cc metrakit, but screw that, its 240 bucks at treats... I could get an airsal 70cc for 100 bucks (perkllc.com?)

The airsal 70cc doesnt have much support on the spreadsheet, so I'm pretty skeptical. It seems like its pretty much plug and play (with a bit of port matching) which is what I'm looking for in a first kit.. but I was reading about a guy who seized his really quickly. That is a bit worrisome.

So here are my questions. What sort of speeds are people getting with airsals? I'm new to dellortos, what dellorto should I buy with the new kit? What is the pick up like..? Is there any advice you guys have? The kit comes with everything I'll need, right?

Thanks!

start rich go down until it stops 4 stroking at the top, if u do that u should be fine

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

i just installed my 70cc Airsal today and started break in...

this is also my first kit. i'm using a 14mm bing, no case matching, just installed properly and started breaking it in. The kit feels great to me.

As far as that Bing leak, I hope you ordered a new float needle valve. The leak is the symptom, not the the problem.

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

your float is adjustable. so adjust it even if your gaskets are bad you dont have to leak if your level is correct.

I was lucky Smitty (SMC) put my e50 together. He's a great tuner, with the Airsal kit I got and 17mm Amal carb, 3 shoe clutch, of course some case mods and attention to detail, he had it radared at 50 mph after a quick break in. As said, run rich, break in properly and it should be good to go. Good luck and have fun, welcome to the addiction side of Puchs...

I've got a new float and float needle in there already. But needle valve...? I didn't know you could order/change that...?

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

do you really think a 3 shoe clutch is necessary? I've read that a lot of people who kit their puchs do it, but some people swear there is no difference.

What does have 3 shoes over 2 do? I'll accept sarcastic responses.

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

they just grip harder. you can tune them so they slip until they get into high rpms, then the clutch catches and you take off like a rocket. people try to tune them so they grap right when their pipe hits its powerband, which causes insane acceleration. this shortens the life of your clutch though. you can also tune 2 shoe clutches, but they just dont grip as hard.

nice explanation, thanks jon.

I need to get my mits on an airsal 70cc, stat!

"70cc's stat!"

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

Hey man i got a 1977 puch maxi 1.5 e50 too. I have a dellorto 16.16 sha on it and jsut put a proma gp on it last night. The boost i got was crazy, like 10mph and acceleration. It's my first ped so i loving it all. Not sure what jet i got in there, but it was 4 sroking before and now it's not, so i gotta rejet it im pretty sure. Ive got a 70cc airsal on the way and since ur setup seems very similear to mine, what jet range do u recomend, I gonna hit up scooter dealership and get alot so i wont have to wait later to jet properly.

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

Hey Gil ,

I am also going to run a 16/16 Dellorto on my 70cc Airsal, but with a Techno Boss pipe. If you could let us know what jet ends up working for you that would really help me out when i go to put mine together later this winter and break it in next spring. Thanks, -Joe

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

Heya joe i sure will, kit on it's way, in boston i think this morning and on it's way to colorado. shoudl be here by friday or sat i hope.

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

Cool, Mine is in my basement but i'm going to completely tear my Pinto down and probly paint it and customise. Also going to case match it to the E50. So needless to say i won't be breaking it in/ running it until early spring next year.

Also will you be case matching yours, or port matching?

Did you get the High compression 70cc Head also?

Thanks and good luck with your kit, -Joe

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

Im about to order a hc head right this minute from treats lol.

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

AS for port matching, i am reading up and watchign videos on that right now lol. I might hold off just a bit on this kit possibly to tune my bike a little more and learn some more about it. About halfway through the 2 stoke tuners handbook and learning loads on this site, wiki and forums as well as the many people here that are willing to answer my stupid questions. I was told to get my bike running perfecto before the kit, and im not expert, but it seems to be running 3 times better than before with the new pipe and open carb air intake. I guess it was 4 stroking before at wot but that problem has vanished and it's just a nice rev all the way up to max speed. The carb has been cleaned and im prolly gonna order a new exhaust gasket today for good measure. If i can get it running to where i feel confident in it, i will bolt that kit the day i get it time permitting. Got 4 more days to cram my brain full of moped knowledge hehe.

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

There is no difference if you don't tune it properly. If you just throw one in without tightening the springs there will be no difference...

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

You don't need to port match the Airsal... I get close to 50MPH out of mine. No case matching. The Transfer ports are pretty much the same as stock...

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

Nice to know! Been learning how to tune and what to look for these past 2 weeks. I only wanna do like 40 on mine, but a strong 20 to 40 accell. Gearing and breaks are next.

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

do 15/45 with a 3 shoe clutch tuned and your 16mm carb and pipe and you will fly up to about 40 with the airsal...

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

i was doing 43 when i went past a speed sign and i was still accelerating. I'm using the stock 14bing w/ high flow air filter and a boss pipe. so i'm sure youll get what you want very soon after installing.

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

Woohooo! MY airsal 70 is at home waiting for me. However i have no jets, but.... my girlfriend is off today and she can go down to the scooter store for me i hope. I'll report back later

Re: My puch's first kit .. Airsal 70cc questions

Oh yes....the airsal 70cc kit is very fast lol. Im using a proma gp, dellorto 16, and the stock 50cc head. Very fast even with crappy head and prolly and air leak i'm suspecting hit 38 and was still sccellarating when i ran outta room (stop sign) wih only 75% throttle i'd say . That's after a 20mile semi break in, still havent gone full throttle yet, but i suspect i can go much faster than 40. I was also running a 14x45.
