$800 to spend

Gunther McCilicutty /

I picked up this 1978 Puch Maxi Sport for 50 bucks. It runs but I bought it as a project bike for this winter.

I have a Puch Maxi Luxe the same year and have been doing some slight mods (drilled carb and intake, pipe, air filter), drop bars) in my profile. I want to keep it semi stock--like the daily driver....now I want a Hot Rod.

I want to kit the Sport. I am still a noob to tuning...baby steps

That being said- What would you do to this bike if you had a budget of $800 bucks....keep in mind the powdercoating the frame and mags, misc cables, switches, brakes, accessories, ect and whatnot will cost about $100....so I guess I got $700 to spend.

$800 to spend

oh...and the reason why I am saying this is that I want to buy all the parts this month...I have a baby girl due end of November and will not have the cash then to be buying moped stuff prolly till spring. I need to make a shopping list and need some noob tuner kit mods suggestions.

Re: $800 to spend

Take the $800 and open a college account for the girl. While you are cruising a little slower you'll have the satisfaction of having done the right thing. Just my two cents

Re: $800 to spend

well how fast do you want to go?

Id say start off with a metra 65 kit, or something 70cc.

a new carb and intake is in order, anywhere from 16-21mm.

you'll want to order a ton of jets, and an nice air filter,

maybe a few different sprockets for tuning,

and a nice pipe.

the homeoet is nice, but kinda pricey imo.

Re: $800 to spend

you can do so much performance with not spending alot of money. but then you could spend 1000's and get alot of performance too. if you want to go around 50 get a 70cc kit. 19del. and simo or homet. that shit would fly if you tuned it right. put some money into cosmetics as well. get some mags and powder coat them. and do a crazy ass paint job. very much fun can be had with 800 dollars and a ped.

Re: $800 to spend

how is the engine? usually when kitting and such you want to put new bearings and seals. its not so easy on the 2 speed. i would take the cylinder off and take a look. if its nice and clean and your bearings are good then go for it. get a nice slap on kit. the metra 65 is the best bet for first time kitters but hard to come by these days. go with something piston port. you don't really want to mess with reeds right away. athena 60, malossi 60, k-star 70, etc... also there is this little nub at the bottom of 2 speeds in the case that needs to ground down to fit the bigger piston. kind of a pain with out taking the engine apart. stick a cloth or something in there and seal the edges with silly put and grind it carefully. you don't want any metal bits in there. i would also go with a basic carb too. 16 dellorto is cool, but you will need to get the riser for 2 speeds or special 2 speed intake!! 1997 or mopedwarehouse has them I think! since you got some cash maybe go for a nice pipe, 6p homoet or something!! or boss for cheapies!! just an opinion from another moped addict!! cheers!!

Re: $800 to spend

gear it to 13x45 performance clutch so it grabs at silly high rpms and just do wheelies up to 20 mph....

Re: $800 to spend

i'll ride really slow with you whenever you want for 500. you'll seem faster by comparison. its a win win.

Re: $800 to spend

FYI, cheap powder coating is about $100-$200 usually, and cables, switches, brakes, different bars end up running about $100. I'd say you have $500 bucks to spend. If you have a 2 speed, I say do some porting, get a pipe and carb and call it good. If you have an E50, new bearings / seals / crank (top/rito) 3 shoe (cheapie w/ paz springs) and at this point we have spent $200. You've got $300 to put on a cyilinder/pipe/carb. I say, get a nice pipe (estoril) and a Malossi or Kstar kit, and then drill out your bing. The money goes fast, as for the moped, that remains to be seen.

Re: $800 to spend

I called a place here in town that does powder coating and they want $395 for the frame and $100 each for the wheels. I never had anything powder coated before but that seemed pretty high to me. Let me know where you are having yours all done for $100 and I will ship mine out. Chip

Re: $800 to spend

You gotta make friends in the buisness to get shit powdercoated for cheap.

Or if that fails, head out to your local colleges. Most of them have some sort of painting programs, and theyre always looking for random things to paint, for usually pretty cheap.

Re: $800 to spend

Check locally, go to a dirt track race or something similarly sort of "white trash" kind, and ask around there, some of those guys will be able to recommend a guy who can do it for cheap. You could also mail it all to Motion Left Mopeds, for about maybe $150 round trip shipping through UPS, plus what ever kind of super good deal Devin will give you.

Re: $800 to spend

If you go to a place that is doing powder coating. See what colors they are doing that week, you can normally get your frame done one of those colors cheaper. Custom colors are alot more.

This is a ton of help guys.

as for the powder coating I got that covered. I am an Outsourcing Agent for my company and spend a couple hundred thousand a year at a few of my metal shops. I have talked to them all and they said they would do it for free just as long as I buy the powder and clear for it which is like 100 bucks at the most.

I got 800 max to spend and I looked up some stuff that you guys recommended and it looks like I will be into for at least 600 with the EBR's, Powder, Kit, and misc performance parts.

Like I said before, I got this bike for 50 bucks and plan on doing a ground up restoration/custon chop job. I may fuck it up, I may need to buy new tools, and I may need to take more time, however I will post the final result next June.
