Getting rid of a head gasket leak

How would i get rid of a head gasket leak? Im sealing up my new kit, because it had a bunch of airleaks. it doesnt have a huge airleak at the head, but it changes the idle speed slightly when i spray carb cleaner on there. ive got a brand new head gasket on there, so i dont know what else to do. maybe put a thin bead of high temp permatex rtv sealant on the metal head gasket?

thanks!

yup.

Re: Getting rid of a head gasket leak

bad solution.

a: make sure the surfaces are flat and clean with some plate glass and 400 grit sand paper.

b: anneal the gasket by heating it with a torch, dont melt it though. work hardened aluminum wont seal very well.

c: torque progressively and evenly.

^^better solution.

Permatex is really more of a quick fix....

Re: Getting rid of a head gasket leak

thanks. i didn't think id have to do that with a brand new kit. i guess they really aren't constructed that well, though. guess i'll get the sand paper out.

Re: Getting rid of a head gasket leak

It's not necessarily poor construction. It doesn't take much to (slightly) warp that thin of a piece of aluminum, if could have been improperly torqued at first.

A square foot of marble tile from Home Depot works good too if you can't find thick glass

Re: Getting rid of a head gasket leak

If you over torque your head, you'll break your stud and have an air leak. Dude, get back to the topic.

max, if you don't have anything useful to contribute to solving Jon's problem, Please, don't contribute at all. This is about trying to fix a head gasket leak, not about how insecure you are with your sexuality. So if you can't solve Jon's problem (which happens to be herpes) please don't post.

thanks
