What should I do with this Puch?

I recently picked up a Maxi Luxe 2hp and I will probably need a new carb and I noticed that my cylinder was leaking exhaust and gas/oil upon further inspection the gasket from the cylinder to the crankcase was bad. So I was wondering a few things. Can I make my own gaskets? If so do I need to use gasket material, if so what kind cardboard, cork, ect..? I didn't have a gasket between head and cylinder, do I need one? And finally I have my head and cylinder off right now. What free or really cheap things should I do for performance.

Re: What should I do with this Puch?

the 2hp didn't have a gasket between the head and cylinder. i don't think u can make a gasket because i think they have a squish ring thing, don't they?

Re: What should I do with this Puch?

ya it does have a ring on the head. I didnt know if a gasket should go around that. Its cool to make one for between cylinder and crankcase right? I geus I am going to port match my exhaust but and am open for suggestions on the intake porting. Dont worry I am not interested in port tuning anything else.

Re: What should I do with this Puch?

check out the wiki. only way to get things, or the search.

Re: What should I do with this Puch?

Thanks, I already looked all through the wiki. I guess I am just going to make my own gaskets. Im assuming this will be fine.

Re: What should I do with this Puch?

should be fine, try it, if it isn't u will know :P

Re: What should I do with this Puch?

Be aware that different thickness gaskets there will move your cylinder up/down in relation to the piston stroke, this will change your port timing. Some people play with these gaskets in order to change this timing. Just make sure you have clearance on the piston/head/spark plug, and that your compression is cool.

Re: What should I do with this Puch?

The gasket I made is almost exactly as thick as the original but is a tiny bit thinner so better compression but may change port timing. I hope its not enough to effect it. when I opened it up i found the old gasket was not for my high torque head but actually for the regular open port head. This gaskets port holes were too small and obstructing my ports so hopefully this will make it run better. It ran like crap when I got it but I assumed it was the carb. It was not getting enough air so this may have been part of the problem.

Re: What should I do with this Puch?

Wow, so i just cleaned up my ports and matched one of them and made appropriate gaskets and this thing seems to be running very strong. I havent gotten a chance to test top speed because its pouring outside here because of Gustave and my tires are rotted. It still bogs some from a dead stop with wide open throttle, its worse if I run the airbox and dies instantly with choke so I know I am still rich at least in low speed. I am using a honda jet needle right now because I couldnt find a bing and this must be at least part of it.
