Hobbit / PA50 + LeoVince + Variator Weights

Raymond Rexroad /

Just passing along my experience with my LeoVince.

As many have learned, the LeoVince is a very good mid-range and top-end pipe, but the bottom-end sucks (at least compared to stock).

In addition, I was a little disappointed with the 0 to 15 or 20 MPH acceleration.

I thought it was time to tune my variator.

At first, I used PA50I weights, and the acceleration was vastly improved. Top end speed was not affected at all.

Next, I started drilling stock PA50II weights, and I think that the best weight for this motor/pipe combination is PA50II weight set drilled using a 9/32" drill bit.

I've posted variator weight information in the wiki (see the general information section).

Anyway, a LeoVince combined with the lighter weights accelerates like no tomorrow. The difference is like night and day. So, now I've got a better top end, and much better acceleration, too. YEAH!

used a 9 thirty 2? i wanna do mine soon, is there a special tool for getting the variator off? the on on my bravo is easy but i havent tried to take my hobbit apart yet. ant tips?

Re: Hobbit / PA50 + LeoVince + Variator Weights

Thank you. This information sounds very good. What engine do you have?

I will finish installing my 70cc malossi kit and leo vince exhaust tomorrow. I am putting this on my PA50I, but I did get the ramp plate and weights from the pa50II. I will have to try your idea!

Re: Hobbit / PA50 + LeoVince + Variator Weights

Did you weigh the weights or just eyeball them?

I used a three beam balance to weigh them. I weighed three of the same weights together, then divided by three.

No estimates - the weights that had been drilled on a drill press, then weighed.

I have a stock PA50II cylinder, Boyesen reeds, 80 jet (original carb), with my LeoVince.

If you are getting a 70cc cylinder - you may not need/want the lighter weights, or may not need as light of a weight, due to the torque that you will have available - that I don't with my stock 50cc cylinder.

If you want to give it a try, just try the PA50I weights, and compare them to the PA50II weights. For break-in, I'd probably use the PA50II weights, since the engine doesn't have to "wind up" to reach decent speeds.

If you do try out both weights, you can get a feel which set is closer to your optimum for your cylinder.

Ahh ok cool thanks. Do you have a pic of your bike online? I'm having a lil bit of trouble mounting the pipe...I thought it bolted right up (the hanger for the muffler) its close...but I don't know...might have to jerry rig something....

Re: Hobbit / PA50 + LeoVince + Variator Weights

Oh Oh Oh

and what size is the bolt for the variator that needs to be taken off? I'ma have to buy one.

Oh and rickus.....to get the variator off, use one of these (the pic I posted) to hold the variator, and then wrench the big bolt off. I have not done it yet, as I don't have the right size wrench, but K & R said this is what he has done.

36mm

Re: Hobbit / PA50 + LeoVince + Variator Weights

36mm..... same size as the flywheel nut on a VW Beetle.

You can use a big crescent wrench though.

How'd you know that? Are you an ex-Beetle owner too?

Also the same as the Beetle axle nut, too - I think.
