puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

I'm trying to install a tecno boss from treats on my maxi, but I'm gettin stuck with the bolts. I can't even get a socket in on the one side because of the pipe and fin. There's just no room.

Is it my bolts? the stud could be bent, but I had no trouble with my stock cigar. The boss header is obviously a bit wider. Should I use different hardware? I'm just trying to use the stuff that was there with the cigar.

Also seems like the one side that i can get at will tighten up, but not flush. it looks like it first hits on the weld around the header.

Just wondering what the usual setup is... I didn't really expect any issues. I still have the gasket in there. Should it be?

Maybe it's the pipe?

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

If you don't file those welds flat where the nuts hit it will cause the exhaust studs to bend when you torque it down. Otherwise grind, cut or hammer off some fins so you can get an open end wrench in there

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

Or buy the longer nuts that take a 9mm socket.

Thanks for the heads up. I just ordered one of those pipes today.

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

thanks for the replies.

i'll try to find some of the taller or deeper nuts, and get to cleaning up that weld.

i can hardly wait to get this new pipe on there.

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

Fuck that noise, take out the exhaust studs and run allen head bolts.

I did allen head bolts for a while...but eventually stripped the threads in the cylinder.

Treats sells long 10mm nuts, which are awesome for pipes with big headers. I use a set on my boss and it's prefect. They're an inch or so long, with 10mm nut heads at the end. Makes life amazingly easy.

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

The do make nuts with smaller hex heads with the same thread.

Or

just grind the sides of the existing nut so it'll fit.

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

i just used a regular open end wrench (long ways) and tightened the stock nut back on.... no cutting or ordering new parts, it just takes a little longer to put the exhaust nut on.

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

i had the same problem. i called treats and they told me to file out the flange holes so it could slid from side to side. i looked into doing that and i would have had to file off some of the heat sink fins. you can do what these guys are saying and do set screws but then you have to take the studs out( and if you brake those you are in for some fun. ) i took mine and dented it in just slightly on the side that i was having trouble with. i did this in a vice and used a socket to make the dent. you dont have to make a big dent just enough to make the clearance. just dont crank on it. i know people are going to say BUT YOUR RESTRICTING IT but it is better for me to have it on then worry about the smallest amount of restriction. if you decide to go this way i can send some pictures of the process.

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

oh, whenever you get a new pipe it's also a good idea to go over the face of the exhaust flange with wide file to make sure it is flat cause most aren't

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

get a crappy 10mm socket and grind it down till its thin enough to fit. not too thin though, just thin enough!! I call it my high performance 10!! I use it all the time!! sometimes treats sells the taller brass nuts that work great too!!

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

I ended up filing down the welds so that the nuts sit flush; opened up the holes on the flange just a touch; and then used the open end wrench the long ways to tighten the 'tight' side down.

I'll check around for some of the longer bolts. I guess using the stock ones can be made to work, but the taller ones definitely sound like the way to go.

thanks again for all of the information!

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

Mijukin, did you use a ratchet to tighten those allen head bolts or what? I use an allen bit in my screwdriver, and I have never felt like I'm going to strip threads.

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

so I have it mounted, but I'm not having good results.

I have the hi flow air filter from treats as well, and i'm running a 66 jet right now. (64 was in there when i got it). 14 mm Bing. I've been messing with the timing, and i've changed the jets here and there, (66, 68, 70), but I seem to have ZERO torque. I can't get faster than 20 mph. I know torque is supposed to suffer, but it doesn't seem to ever be picking up.

Is my timing just messed up? I'm aiming for 18 mm before TDC. I was trying to keep the gap around .35 mm.

Air-leaks? I'll have to test.

I'm figuring I should be at 68 jet, but maybe even higher?

It's a 2 HP maxi... stock except new air filter and boss exhaust.

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

you probably need to upjet way more. the boss likes alot of jet.

Re: puch maxi + tecno boss - installation hangup

so I upjet to the 70... seems better. I'm hitting 20 mph now. Maybe I need to go up even further?

Then disaster...

I should've gone sk8ing.

The pedal arm broke off... how is it normally attached? The left side seems to have a bolt. Was I missing something? What's my next step? New crank?

not so lucky at the moment, hehe.

Grind the chrome off and weld it
