It depends on whether you have a hi-compression cylinder head, or a regular cylinder head. Don't mess with a high compression head. A regular head you can sand down though. Post a picture of the underside of your cylinder head, and we can tell you whether it's a high-comp head or not.

If your exhaust port is reduced in size due to carbon deposits, then cleaning it will help performance.

I think there is slot to do with the piston and cylinders on the stock setup. If you have a head with a large volume and swap it out with one of lower volume, regardless of the cylinder, your c/r goes up. That's a low comp head.
