Minarelli 80cc trouble..

I have finally with the help of others, put together my 80cc Minarelli V1 Imperial kit.. I have yet to start it up but already I have encountered a problem...

The piston seems to hit the stock head that I have... I can hear it hit something and it looks like its the domed compression area of the head.. (I should probably put some marker on it and see if it leaves anything on the piston head for sure, but I think that's the problem)

Should I add another gasket or two?

Should I get it machined? Have someone widen the domed compression area? Not wild about loosing compression..

Anyone encountered this before? Anyone running an 80cc Imperial for a Minarelli V1?

Thanks

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

a few gaskets will do the trick. or machine the head, whatevers clever. i fucking love that kitT!!

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

is this kit really that amazing, I thought about restricting the shit out of it and making a torque machine.

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

One gasket did me fine.

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

Hello Dan,

I would use clay to take a reading \ measurement or hot wax but clay is best I think. I have had a problem of burning up the alloy/alumium head gasket to the point of where there is nothing left. I also have talked with a couple of people about this in Argentina, common problem. Here is the thing. The kits are made for 40mm crank rod when you use the 42 or 43mm cranks. 40mm=82cc, 42mm= 85.7 cc something think, 43mm rod is 89.7. Its just a longer rod. Thats why you must use a base gaskets and glue them together to make sure they seal. -Ed

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

Oops... 51mm=90cc kits

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

longer con rods DO NOT ADD CC's, bigger crank lobes do. longer con rods just move everything forward.

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

same thing i thought.

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

Wouldn't putting two head gaskets together alter the timing?

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

well if your piston is contacting your head due to rod length then if you can move the cylinder and head until they do not contact then your port timing should be about right because the piston was designed for that cylinder, and right not it is traveling too far out of the cylinder

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

hmm.. I suppose so.. at the moment I am running well with two head gaskets and it runs fine but I think in time as they get hotter and thinner it will start hitting again..

I looked at my stock head and it's got a definitive lip to the combustion dome so I think I am going to take it to get machined.. I have an extra one if it mangles the compression.

Hey zach, when you say "crank lobes", which part of the crank are you referring to?

Re: Minarelli 80cc trouble..

we put this kit on my roomies concord, we used two base gaskets and the head gasket that came with the kit. this thing ripppppps at 1/2 throttle (he's new to kitted bikes and afraid to go any faster, plus we're breaking it in still).

personally, i can't wait for it to be broken in and to experience it at full throttle.
