no head gasket--safe?

Gunther McCilicutty /

OK...I read the wiki and searched threads and still have a question about Puch heads and hi compression.

I don't want to mill my head(yet) and was thinking about removing the gasket. I really don't want to screw up my motor and want a reliable bike like I have. If I take off the gasket, will it be as reliable as it was before?

Puch cylinder heads tend to be well formed enough that you can take the head gasket out and it will still seal just fine. If you take it out, put things back together, start it up, and feel air puffing out around the area where the gasket had been, tighten things down a little. If it's still doing it, you need to keep the gasket or smooth the head out so it seals correctly.

what kind of gains can I expect?

Re: no head gasket--safe?

You can expect a little more low end. That's about it.

Re: no head gasket--safe?

I prefer the no-gasket dealy, but I've dealt with a couple of warped heads. You might still want to slightly mill your head just to give it a fresher, possibly flatter surface.

Re: no head gasket--safe?

don't mean to thread jack but I've been thinking about taking out the gasket on my ciao to rase the compression. anybody know if this tends to be a good or bad idea on a vespa? Ok fine, I jacked the the tread...Sorry.

Re: no head gasket--safe?

Or just get some valve grinding compound, and a sheet of glass and go at it in a figure 8 motion... That's how I do it.

Re: no head gasket--safe?

You can do it... just lap the head as I mentioned above to make sure it's clean and flat and bolt it on...

Do you think like 1000 to 1200 grit oxide wet sandpaper will work as well?

What does the valve grinding compound look like? I am not very familiar.

will I need to upjet after the operation? I am running a 68 now with a biturbo and high flow air filter on a stock 1.5 hp Maxi Luxe.

I just put on new Gazelles and now my low end sucks real bad right now...those tires are heavy suckers.
