I have a kitted e50. The kit that is on it is an older kit. I think it's about 3 years old and an airsal euro kit. I was running a proma circuit and it would go just under 50mph. I recently switched to a 6p and now it is definately going faster and revving higher but makes a pinging noise at high speeds? The only other thing I have changed is my spark plug. Oh, and I up jetted as well. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this?
Some kind of detonation? Try a little colder plug maybe?

Def a colder plug and higher octane gas... What carb you running with the Airsal... I have one on my E50 and just got enough miles on it that I'm comfortable to start tuning it for speed.
Are you on the performance setup sheet?
Also, do a compression test. If it's crazy high, you need either higher octane fuel or to back the timing off a hair. Preignition/pinging/detonation killed my eurocylinder, a chunk of the piston ring flew apart and carved a trench in my cylinder wall. So be careful...
I will check the compression and change to a cooler plug. I already run 93 gas so the next step would be race gas for $8 a gallon. Should I only try to back off on the timing if my compression is crazy high or should I do it anyway since I'm running at such high rpm's?
I'm running a 16mm dellorto. I think I have a 79 or 80 jet in there. I would have to double check. When I was running the proma circuit I had a 74 or 76 jet depending on the weather.
You should move the timing back just to see if the pinging stops or becomes less.
So that means I turn it clockwise right?
I still want it to fire before top dead center though right?
clockwise would retard it according to elliot...
could be the characteristic of the kit, as some other kits have some sort of pinging. but do the check that was said in previous posts
Yes you want it to fire beforeTDC. Turn the backing plate in the same direction as flywheel rotation to retard. Against to advance. You can also advance by opening points more and retard by closing points some but only to be done within some reasonable point gap.
Thanks guys. Tonight I put a cooler plug in and went for a short ride. I didn't notice the pinging as much as a weird buzzing or rattling now so it seems a little better. Unfortnately I am going to have to wait until tomorrow night to check it again. Riding dark, winding country roads with no street lights is pretty scary at 50mph.
