65cc Metrakit

I read on Wiki that the timing needs to be advanced when installing the Metrakit. My question now is that absolutely necessary. In other words, I installed my metra and I wasn't able to start it, I wonder if the cause is that I didn't adjust the timing or if I forgot something else.

Any ideas?

Re: 65cc Metrakit

doubt it's the timing unless it's way off. I'd try the usual spark and fuel thing first. Are you way too rich?

Re: 65cc Metrakit

is the piston turned the right way?

Re: 65cc Metrakit

my timing was the slightest advanced to run, not even sure if it was necessary

Re: 65cc Metrakit

I didn't have to.

Re: 65cc Metrakit

it's suggested but nut necessary. your problem is probably elsewhere.

Re: 65cc Metrakit

I suggest 16 degrees retarded. Safe at high RPMs.

My very own moped Guru tells me.

Yep, pointing to the exhaust port

Will do, but I have a hunch that the main jet may be too big. I imagine if the jet is too large that the ped won't run either, right?

I was afraid of that, well back to the drawing board and checking out the basics first LOL thanks for your input.

Update, I got it running. Was the fuel intake on the carb. I didn't realize that you can turn it downwards. Fuel intake was pointing upwards so the fuel didn't flow properly. So that is now solved but....

Now I get it running but as soon I am trying to give some gas the engine stalls. Does that sound in general like a jetting issue?

Re: 65cc Metrakit

Yea, sounds like carb.

But there isn't much I can do with the carb then change the jetting, right? I will down jet and see what I get

Re: 65cc Metrakit

You never said what carb and intake you're running on this. You could be jetted wrong or your fuel could sitll be too slow getting into the bowl. I don't understand why it should matter what way the fuel inlet is pointing. Something sounds weird.

Re: 65cc Metrakit

Alright, I have a dellorto 16/16 carb with a 16 mm intake, that came with the carb. Also put a boss pipe on it. With the inlet pointing upwards the fuel wouldn't flow through the line, after pointing it downwards I could see the fuel flow fine.

Re: 65cc Metrakit

By the way, I am running this on a '78 Maxi

Re: 65cc Metrakit

but wait.. the wiki says:

"8. Tuning/Timing: Slow down or retard the point of ignition by 1.8 mm to 2mm before top dead center. Change the spark plug for a grade equivalent to B7H. "

http://www.mopedarmy.com/wiki/Metrakit_directions

Where did you read the timing was supposed to be advanced? Really curious as I don't think the timing on my metra65 is quite right yet. I'm about at stock timing right now but haven't wanted to advance past that because of heat issues and the fact that the directions i read said to retard the timing, not advance it. Then again it's just a moped so i guess i'll just fuck with it and see what happens.

Re: 65cc Metrakit

I misread the article, I red the same article on "metrakit directions

Re: 65cc Metrakit

2mm is way too much. I'm driving with 1,4 or so and a B8H plug.

Re: 65cc Metrakit

I did some research regarding the spark plug and can't find exact match for B8H or B7H spark plug. The only ones I could find were B8HS and B7HS from NGK, are these the spark plugs mentionend?

Re: 65cc Metrakit

Yea they're the ones.

Re: 65cc Metrakit

I am almost ready to kick the crap out of the ped. LOL

So, I adjusted the timing and the ped started firing up consistently. Next I down jetted to 68 jet on the mallossi 15/15 carb and the ped starts and runs fine.

But being me I tried to fine tune next the air/fuel mixture and idle. Everything is fine, but now on my test drive the ped stalls and it's hard to start. Aaaargh, why me?????

I put the maxi back in the garage for the day and have a beer now. I guess it's back to square one and double check everything. I don't think I seized it.

any advice what went wrong and what to check first? Roar.

Re: 65cc Metrakit

Set the timing back to stock. Make sure you have good spark and no electrical gremlins.

Make sure you get consistant fuel flow.

Check for air leaks.

Will sure do. This week-end, checking for electrical gremlin - I suspect that it something electrical. Do back tracing, spark, loose wire, fuel flow, etc. etc.

Thanks for your kind advice, I'll keep you posted after the week-end if I was able to get the old lady running again. LOL
