fucked up timing make for fruitless tuning!!!
and use tools
good tip for all the newbie tuners out der.
But how do you know when your timing is optimal? Trial and error? Puchs with the standard stator plate will run at _almost_ any setting you put them at. I mean, short of backfiring because you're WAY off, do you just adjust until you find a setting at which it runs best, and then plug chop and carb tune from there?
how to find out if its optimal? set it to factory specs, or slightly advanced/retarded if you prefer. timing isnt really guesswork.
You could use an ohmeter and a device to measure BTDC so that you can see if the points are opening at like 1.5MM BTDC.
Here's one device you can make...

And another thread on setting timing, showing a way to measure TDC. With an ohmeter yiou just need to see the current change, which is when the points open - and see if that time is at the proper BTDC.
"Moby BTDC measuring stick":http://www.mopedarmy.com/forums/discuss/read.php?f=6&i=105459&t=105447
You can see that Moby's are more sensitive to timing than Puchs!
jake u contradicted yourself lmao, go to factory specs and then just move it where u want lmao but its not gues work hahahaha
read again.
factory specs or advanced. not factory then move it.
