its ZA50 time!!

so i've decided to finally start rebuilding my seized ZA50.

good times.

the end goal is to be able to kit this bitch and not have it just destroy itself, i have heard that the two speeds require some pretty extensive shit in order for this not to happen. can you guys throw me some suggestions as to what i should do here? obviously new seals, bearings, and the like. performance crank? what else?

and before any gets "use the search function" happy, i have been searching but it's all been a bunch of dead ends. so after about an hour of searching i figured i would post it.

any help would rule. thanks.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

Hi never kitted aynthing but if I did I would port and pollish and perhaps have everything balanced, I do not know if this can be done with a moped engine but it is the shit for car engines!

Re: its ZA50 time!!

Porting is good if you know what you are doing. Polishing only helps the exhaust port. There is no way to "Balance" a single piston two stroke engine. There are no performance cranks for ZA50's, but you can have a performance rod pressed into your existing crank. Shims and tolerances are vital, as well as appropriate gaskets.

If you want it to last, send it to Devin Biek at Motion Left Mopeds, he will rebuild it perfectly and it will do you well.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

i know devin will rebuild it and make it amazing, he did the same to my friends ZA50. i guess if it comes down to it thats what i'll do. i really want to do it myself though. teach a man to fish and all, you know?

Re: its ZA50 time!!

Then the eaisest way to do it would be contact Devin and see if he can sell you all the parts you need to do it yourself, but you are on your own for the tools.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

Davey, you may just be better off sending it to Devin. My understanding is a ZA50 is not something you just want to dive into. When mine blows up, I'm either throwing an E50 on or making a trip to Elkhart.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

yeah.. you're probably right.

its unstuck now, maybe i'll just get it going until i can afford to make that happen. any idea what that would run from him? i guess that's more of a question for devin huh?

one more quick question, what is the name of that stuff that eats away the rust? not muratic acid, its apparently a spray on foam kind of thing. i remember a huge debate about it, but can't remember the name of it so the search function is no help.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

nevermind. just found it. evaporust! lets see what it can do.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

Tyler Jacobson /

i just rebuilt one. i took a bunch of photos and hope to be able to make a wiki entry with them. it is my first try. i havent run the engine yet because im trying to set up the internal ignition coil.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

take it apart and put it all back together with in the tolerances if u can find them

Re: its ZA50 time!!

devin rebuilt mine and its awesome, throw the polinni 64 cc kit on it, you'l get the performance you want and its not to much stress on the crank.

performance cranks dont exist for 2 speeds, but what Motion left will do is split your stock crank and throw a performance conrod, port and polish, and he also sells the intake riser you'll need for your 15mm bing carb to clear...

Re: its ZA50 time!!

I'm going to have to rebuild my za50 over the winter. I've been reading up a bit and have found a few references so far to 'special tools'.

I discovered that I literally could not repair my bmw motorcycle engine, despite a very well stocked workshop and quite a bit of background in mechanics. There were just a few too many instances where you could not go forward withoug BMW special tool number blah, blah.

Is this true of the ZA50? I've got lots of tools. Drawers full of pullers, ring pliers, expanders, a small hydraulic press, a small lathe, a tig welder (to make tools when all else fails).

Is there a Puch special tool number blah, blah, that I will not be able to work around (besides the flywheel puller. I already know I need to buy one of those).

Re: its ZA50 time!!

sambo

what did it cost you to have the za50 rebuilt?

Re: its ZA50 time!!

Yes Davey Do it! I rebuilt a za50 with basic tools, even got the bearings out of the cover. It worked fine stock though I wouldn't want to kit it.

Then I bought a spare za50 and had devin build it and it's so much better. New shift pucks, bearings, gaskets, seals, perf conrod, well worth the money and piece of mind it was done right. He even built a special riser for the intake. So tight and awesome.

you're on your own getting it back together. good luck,

Re: its ZA50 time!!

I'm not obliged to say because devin hooked me up. You should call up the shop and he'll give you a quote for exactly what you want.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

There are lot of special tools to measure the tolerances, if your planning on doing it yourself be ready to spend some money on puch specific tools.

I couldn't have rebuilt mine with out devin and chad burke.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

its really not as hard as everyone says if u use a torque wrench, i've seen them rebuilt in an hr b4 by creatures jimmi and graham.

the biggest issue are the hockey puck clutches in there go bad and u will need a supply of 2 speeds to rebuild it with good ones over and over. there is also a cool mod where u put the 2nd gear clutch pads in backwards so they engage later u will shift waaaaay later, it narley.

the other downside to 2 speeds are u can't get performance cranks but u can get a performance crank rod pressed into the old crank lobes. also 2 speed cranks tend to snap off the magnetos when running serious power like 80 kits etc.

goodluck i wish i could help u more.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

yeah colin. yours is badass. thats what made me think of doing it. fuck it, once i have cash its going to devin.

plus i have a spare that i can fuck with all i want. have devin get one going, destroy one myself. america.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

Nice, Graham. Wiki?

Re: its ZA50 time!!

and when its all done you can watch the bearing come flying out of the side cover or the flywheel going faster down the road then you are going ,why waste the money when you can make an e50 go faster then the za50 will ever go

Re: its ZA50 time!!

umm seems to me that with a za50 u could gear steeper and go faster sure u might blow up your engine but thats what jb welds are for

Re: its ZA50 time!!

Jason Jason Bobason /

I'm about to rebuild a ZA50 with a 65cc Metrakit and a Metrakit perf ormance rod pressed in to the crank. I'm sure I'll run into a couple of problems, but I'm mildly intelligent and resourceful. I think as long as I'm meticulous about clearances and tolerances I will be okay. The gear dampeners do concern me, though. I have a spare engine but if anyone knows a way to make new dampeners, please share. I think someone said they used urethane, like the rhino stuff sprayed in truck beds.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

You can buy new dampeners from Devin @ motion Left mopeds, they manufacture them, and he also sells them through TreatsHQ. If you are adventurous, there was a post a few months back in here about making your own.

Re: its ZA50 time!!

I'm gonna JB weld mine.
