jetting for a wierd setup

A buddy of mine is building a Magnum for his 15 year old son. He wants it to be torquey and not worried about top end, just mid and low. He just doesn't want his son riding super fast.

He bought an Athena 60cc kit, but wants to run the stock carb 14/14 Bing, stock air filter and stock pipe as well.

He left the stock jetting just to see if it would start. I'm not sure what the stock jetting is, but would putting a 60cc top end on there make it run rich?

It just doesn't seem right, but I dunno. The only difference is the 60cc top end. He's also using the stock 50cc high compression head...

Anybody running a similar setup?

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

So yeah, the issue is that he fouled a plug in like 5 minutes and it had zero low end... Could he have the piston on upside down? I just thought of that...

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

Noone has anything for me?

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

No way the jetting is right if he's just left it stock. If he wants good low end he should really get a good low end pipe, stock airbox and carb should be fine. The arrow on the piston should point down to the exhaust port if I remember right.

What oil ratio is he running? Probably fouled the plug from too much oil. Could also be using too cold of a plug and it's not able to burn off all the deposits.

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

too lean can sometimes seem like its too rich, bogging down low etc, so upjet and check for leaks first with some carb cleaner

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

Thanks.

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

plug chops and a dude told me sometimes u don't have to up jet because it creates more suction thus to much gas

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

I just don't get how it would run rich switching to a higher cc top end... I'll find out what plug he's running, but I personally think his piston is in upside down... Unless he messed with the timing. I'll figure it out.

The main point of this post was to see if anyone else was running a 60cc Athena with a stock pipe and 14mm bing carb and intake to see what main jet they were running.

I may convince him to buy a proma GP.

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

I bet it's lean. The fouling could be oil fouling from incorrect mixture. New kit should be 32:1 for the first few tanks. Fouling could be sue to incorrect heat range as well.

Look into a pipe change too cause it'll be a big improvement.

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

He mixed 50/1 in the tank, or so I'm told... I'll talk to him today about jetting, but he ordered a range of them that 1977 suggested for his set up...

Re: jetting for a wierd setup

There's at least part of the problem. He should've premixed. all of the oil is in the bottom of the tank. Drain it and premix. Tell him to get a tecno hunter, and lower the gearing. I have sick low end with my hunter. I couldn't take off without the front wheel lifting up with my newport until I geared above 16/45 with my 65MK hunter combo.
