gps to get the top speed #'s for the books but generally i run no speedos, once u get an idea how fast u are going with the gps etc you just know.

some puch speedos can go to 50 the 40mph ones when they hit 0 again its 50mph. you can also buy speedos that go up to like 80 or so that fit moped cables.

for a while i used a bicycle digital speedo it was a bit sluggish but very accurate if you set it up correctly. unfortunately i had to file aspoke to get the magnet to fit and they look unattractive on avintage machine.

these days i say f a speed and gps when i get the chance or base my speed off other bikes around me.

I'm only interested in put a speedo unit on because the one I'll be using has a temp gauge for the head.

If the Tomos speedo goes to the pin you are going some undeterminable number of mph, just like when it says 40 you are going some undeterminable number of mph. The stock Tomos and Puch speedos are both wildly inaccurate.

When I'm going downhill on my Murray the speedo bounces between 40 and off the top end, and I know by pacing cars it won't get up past 35 actual mph.

On my Tomos, where I want to know the #'s of what my mods are doing I have a Trailtech Vapor. It was a bit of wiring, glue a magnet to the wheel and point the sensor at it, plug in the proper tire diameter, but pretty easy to install. Dead accurate mph readings, numerical tach updates every half second or so and the (digital) analog tach updates real time as far as I can tell.

I really need to get a picture of it up, it looks really nice. Also need to get the "Vapor" text off the front of it and paint the case to match the rest of the ped, then it would look amazing.

agreed, thus the term moped miles per hour has been coined.

also i still don't see the point in a head temp guage unless you specifically know what temp you are aiming for, no one has posted an answer for that, i guess the best way would be to attach atemp guage to a bike that was really fast and reliable and see what numbers it produces, but then again does that change if you are using a different cylinder head aluminum vs cast iron etc. too many variables? maybe not.

also what gps is easy to work with? especially if my bike only has lights and horns and i dont want to f with too many wires?

I have a MIO C230 and it's awesome. No monthly service, back light touch screen with text-to-voice and bicycle routes. I got it on closeout at Best Buy for about $120. It has about a 4 hour battery life if you have the screen on, but for long moped trips, just turn it off until you are confused about where to go!

I use the garmin forerunner for mine. It straps to your wrist like a watch. I ebayed it for like $50. I like it because it is designed for cycling and for running. In cycling mode it gives the % grade of a hill, which I really like.

chris if you are paying a monthly service charge for GPS you are getting ripped off!
