Kitted peds and Speedometers

Hey all,

I was just curious what different people do on kitted bikes as far as speedometers go. Obviously, when you're riding a correctly tuned kit, you're going to be pegging out the typical 30mph speedometer.

My question is whether people with fast kitted bikes run speedos at all, or if a GPS display is common, or what? I like to have something to glance at when I see a cop coming in the other direction, just to put my mind at ease. Do those without speedos just go the speed of traffic, and leave it at that? Or do you blast regardless?

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

gps ftw

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

gps to get the top speed #'s for the books but generally i run no speedos, once u get an idea how fast u are going with the gps etc you just know.

some puch speedos can go to 50 the 40mph ones when they hit 0 again its 50mph. you can also buy speedos that go up to like 80 or so that fit moped cables.

for a while i used a bicycle digital speedo it was a bit sluggish but very accurate if you set it up correctly. unfortunately i had to file aspoke to get the magnet to fit and they look unattractive on avintage machine.

these days i say f a speed and gps when i get the chance or base my speed off other bikes around me.

I'm only interested in put a speedo unit on because the one I'll be using has a temp gauge for the head.

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

the bike computer speedometers are slow to refresh but just as accurate as you program them to be. You just gotta measure your diameter of the wheel and tire as accurately as possible, and then plug in the diameter, circumfrence, whatever.

i think they refresh like every 1.5 seconds, which aint bad for a speedo... if i had a tach i'd want it to be analog or refresh _much_ faster than that, but for just mph, youre probably not fluctuating that much in the first place.

bump

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

tomos read to 40... but if it goes to the pin you are hitting 60 or thats what it reads

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

If the Tomos speedo goes to the pin you are going some undeterminable number of mph, just like when it says 40 you are going some undeterminable number of mph. The stock Tomos and Puch speedos are both wildly inaccurate.

When I'm going downhill on my Murray the speedo bounces between 40 and off the top end, and I know by pacing cars it won't get up past 35 actual mph.

On my Tomos, where I want to know the #'s of what my mods are doing I have a Trailtech Vapor. It was a bit of wiring, glue a magnet to the wheel and point the sensor at it, plug in the proper tire diameter, but pretty easy to install. Dead accurate mph readings, numerical tach updates every half second or so and the (digital) analog tach updates real time as far as I can tell.

I really need to get a picture of it up, it looks really nice. Also need to get the "Vapor" text off the front of it and paint the case to match the rest of the ped, then it would look amazing.

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

the stock speedometer on just about every moped is 3-5mph optomistic. Gps 4 lyf

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

"the stock speedometer on just about every moped is 3-5mph optomistic. Gps 4 lyf"

agreed, thus the term moped miles per hour has been coined.

also i still don't see the point in a head temp guage unless you specifically know what temp you are aiming for, no one has posted an answer for that, i guess the best way would be to attach atemp guage to a bike that was really fast and reliable and see what numbers it produces, but then again does that change if you are using a different cylinder head aluminum vs cast iron etc. too many variables? maybe not.

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

I must have a magic speedo. I am within 1 mph of the gps.

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

so what gps is good?

what gps is cheap?

also what gps is easy to work with? especially if my bike only has lights and horns and i dont want to f with too many wires?

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

No wires on a GPS dude. You just buy one and they are lithium charged in your house... Then you buy a motorcycle GPS mount and rock it...

They are fairly cheap, no where near as cheap as a speedo, but the plus side is they are accurate, can tell you exactly where you are and get you anywhere, and you can use them in your car, on your bike, walking, or whatever...

You pay the price for the unit up front, then a monthly charge for the service... It's cheap.

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

I have a MIO C230 and it's awesome. No monthly service, back light touch screen with text-to-voice and bicycle routes. I got it on closeout at Best Buy for about $120. It has about a 4 hour battery life if you have the screen on, but for long moped trips, just turn it off until you are confused about where to go!

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

my fa 50 speedo when checked by a gps is 2-3 mph slow like it says i am going 27 but the gps says i r going 28.9

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

I use the garmin forerunner for mine. It straps to your wrist like a watch. I ebayed it for like $50. I like it because it is designed for cycling and for running. In cycling mode it gives the % grade of a hill, which I really like.

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

I run one of these:

the 120kph is really more like 100kph. Other than the kilometer markings being slightly off, the speedo is very very accurate across the whole range. It's essentially a 0-60mph speedo.

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

chris if you are paying a monthly service charge for GPS you are getting ripped off!

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

does that mio 230 provide speed information?

also do you manually download and transmit maps to it to account for road updates/whatever? (as opposed to paying a monthly fee)

Re: Kitted peds and Speedometers

Yes it does, and you can manually download that stuff for free.
