first EVER performance mod... (50V)

ok, so it's hardly a 'mod' but I got my 50V running again after swapping out the Gurtner for a Dellorto 15.15. I am by no means a mechanic, but have pretty much been reading the forums every day since I got my ped about a month ago, so im feeling pretty accomplished. Just had to tell someone since my wife could care less.

I have a "B" model and it has the shorty intake which I re-used, would it be beneficial for me to buy the 15mm intake treats has?

Also, I got the cable choke version and hooked it all up, but I never even had to use the choke to get it started before. Pressing the choke with the Gurtner did kill the engine, and thats pretty much all I used it for, but with the Dellorto nothing happens when I pull the choke, you think something is just out of adjustment? Maybe my cable needs to be a little tighter.

Anyone have any tips on adjusting it?

BTW I am running a 62 jet, and my bike is otherwise stock.

Re: first EVER performance mod... (50V)

yea in my experience the cable choke style doesnt work well for dellortos on moby. first of all, you shouldnt need it with a new carb... which is good. second of all, the choke lever on the left handlebar is only designed to pull a cable X inches to accomodate the gurnter... NOT the dellorto. So the most ive ever been able to get the choke to close is about half way.. not so helpful. i installed my choke and after a few days just took it off.. i never use it and when i did try to use it it just didnt function well enough.

58 jet has been good to me.

the 15mm intake is nice. some say it helps performance, others say it dont (i say it does). either way, i think it makes for a nice tidy setup instead of the crazy ass 13ish mm bendy intake.

Re: first EVER performance mod... (50V)

so is it ok to just disconnect the choke cable and leave the hole open? I wanted to get a slightly smaller jet but the 62 was all I could get at the time. I would like to eventually get a bit smaller one.

Looks like mine...

I hooked up a new choke cable and it works properly. 58 jet is working for me.

Not noticeable speed improvement tho. Not certain the Dell is much improvement over a properly cleaned and setup Gurtner. But all the experts promote it. ???

P.S. I mounted the SHA 15, drilled out the existing shorty intake to about 14mm, Didn't want to order just a new 15 mm shorty, don't know if that would make a great difference. My first mod also.

Re: first EVER performance mod... (50V)

Gurtners are fine carbs, but they do have some tiny holes that can be a bitch to clean out. Wari loves them! I also swapped to Dellortos and am quite happy.

I also use the cable choke version with no problem - nice having the lever already on the bike. If you don't have the choke cable just cover the hole - you wouldn't want to suck in any debris, and that hole is much bigger than the ones in the mesh air filter.

Re: first EVER performance mod... (50V)

ok, im finding that my low end is pretty crappy. is it because of the 62 jet? I am probably going to try to get a 58 as that seems to be the consensus. I have found that the choke does help get it started, it just doesn't completely kill the engine. I may take the carb off and make sure the throttle is completely opening also. I will most likely just end up buying the jet and 15mm intake.

I have also noticed that after my engine gets warmed up it seems like I loose a lot of low end power, and just seems to not run as nice as when its cold. It was like this with the Gurtner also. anyone have any ideas?
