Athena 80cc w/ 19mm Dell'orto blowing reeds!

Okay.... I have an 80cc Athena kit with a 19mm delorto carb and it bew out one of the reeds today....

on my Sachs G3 I have to pull the whole damn jug to get at the manifold..... I checked the inside of the piston and there is nothing in there so I guess it blew outta the exhaust when it broke off!

Im using Malossi fiber reed material so there is no damage...

If anyone knows why this is happening Id sure appreciate some info

Pulling the head. exhaust and all is getting tired... this the second time this week it has happened !

Re: Athena 80cc w/ 19mm Dell'orto blowing reeds!

maby the stops arent slose enough and the reeds are opening past there stress point or somin

Or - the reeds weren't designed for an 80cc kit. The larger piston will create more crankcase pressure.

You could try to find some Boyesen reeds. I measured and then took some pictures and sent the results to Boyesen, and thay matched them to a current product (this was for a Hobbit). Should work for you, too. They have fiberglass and carbon fiber, and one other type I don't recall.

Otherwise, you may need to buy reed material and make your own.

Re: Athena 80cc w/ 19mm Dell'orto blowing reeds!

If you are cutting your own you should sand the edges so they dont tear and lock tite em in. i had this same thing happen on mine with the polini carbon fiber material before I knew about sanding the edges, just be glad it wasn't the metal ones.

Re: Athena 80cc w/ 19mm Dell'orto blowing reeds!

I would try some thicker material.

Thanks for the input guys....

I just took it for a ride around the block and its nice and smooth on takeoff but i starts to skip and gurgle and almost backfires in midrange and WOT

I switched from a gianelli pipe to a Simoni and I'm running a 104 jet... do you think I need to downjet to lean it out a bit?

Re: Athena 80cc w/ 19mm Dell'orto blowing reeds!

whats the plug look like?

Yeah Brett...

What kind of material would you suggest?

It's only breaking on one side every time...

I have a sneaking suspicion its already breaking another one from the sound it's making...

Oh well I need to replace the studs now anyway unless its the nuts that are stripping....

I have like 1 more teardown left in me.... before I drive it off the MIT bridge into the river...

I just had a thought.... I need to make sure the decomp valve is fully closed... it was kinda tight when I reinstalled it!

Hey Sabati!

It looks ok... I changed it this morning!

Re: Athena 80cc w/ 19mm Dell'orto blowing reeds!

Daniel Van Donsel /

ok

I discovered that the Compression valve was not closing properly... that clip on there is junk...

I want to screw in an allen bolt to seal off the hole and I need to know if anyone has done this and will I be able to start it with all the pressure capped off inside the 80cc kit?

Thanks!

Re: Athena 80cc w/ 19mm Dell'orto blowing reeds!

Re: Athena 80cc w/ 19mm Dell'orto blowing reeds!
