running pa50I time for some upgrades

Hey y'all

I finally got my 1978 Hobbit running in tip top shape. The ignition coil was bad and after months of searching on ebay I finally got a working one! yay!

Anyway, It hits 17-18 mph pretty quick, then depending on how much the wind is blowing it goes all the way to 20mph like it should.

It kind of is a little slow on th take off (I'm 215 lbs) but not too bad I don't think.

Anyway, has anybody actually tested the leo vince exhaust with a well running bike yet? If not, I may be the first one to try. As far as I know this bike is running great. I don't believe the current exhaust is clogged...and I would like a little more oompf from the get-go.

I would also like to wait at least 1-3 weeks and make sure this is running well and I'm going to get a 70 cc kit for it.

Anyway this is the third day I've had it running and I've owned it for about 8 months. I'm super stoaked. And I'd like to start upgrading it asap!

If you are going to kit it, then you can "get away" with using a PA50I motor. However, you will need to modify the variator and then install a PA50II ramp plate and variator weights. Please see the wiki section for PA50I/PA50II differences, etc.

The Leovince pipe is current not available - like a several month manufacturing delay.

You'll need a PA50II carb, or you'll need to upgrade to a larger carb. See ebay for treatshq's shop.

You'll most likely have to modify another pipe (not made for Hobbit's) to fit your bike.

Oops - I should have said, carb, and manifold, and reed holder (cage?).

Re: running pa50I time for some upgrades

Well I was planning on getting something like this... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180250443808

Yea I guess a larger carb would only make sense wouldn't it ha ha

Even if I got this I would still need to modify the variator and then install a PA50II ramp plate and variator weights?? I didn't know this...

Looks like it's in stock to me....isn't this the same one?

Re: running pa50I time for some upgrades

Hmm....that actually doesn't appear to be the same pipe that is pictured in this http://www.mopedarmy.com/forums/discuss/read.php?f=7&i=88050&t=88045&v=f thread.....

Re: running pa50I time for some upgrades

As far as pipes go, this vespa simonini pipe can be made to fit w/o too much hassle. You lose your center stand and have to cut one of the center stand brackets. You just cut about 1.5" of the stock exhaust header and that acts as the exhaust nipple needed to mount the pipe.

You could also try to fit a PHBG w/o the malossi kit if you are able to find the flat top for the phbg. Maybe Dellorto Direct?

Re: running pa50I time for some upgrades

That malossi kit is AWESOME, I have my PA50II in the forties with JUST that

Re: running pa50I time for some upgrades

So about this PHBG. It is a dellorto carb, looks to come in a few different sizes...and they kind of expensive....100 ish bucks? I wonder how much that would really be worth....

And how about different manifolds and air filters? I wouldn't mind getting bigger carb and exhaust, tune for that, then get the 70cc kit as like a last step. This seems like a good way to go.

Would I still need to get all the variator parts and what not from the paII?

Re: running pa50I time for some upgrades

Yes on the PA50II variator or check out noogies (i think) suzuki katana variator mod (cost more $$$ but more tuneable).

You can hack off a puch exhaust and stick on there as an intake manifold and couple whatever carb you want to it just as long as it clears the frame. Like one of those cheapo mikuni copies that take dellorto jets.

Re: running pa50I time for some upgrades

I'm a little fuzzy on what reeds are. I believe they are like a one way check kind of deal but I don't know how performance reeds help.

On eaby they are only 16 dollars which isn't bad at all. But is it worth it? I think I read somewhere that they help with idle...
