Problems with DMP cranks ? !

Anyone else had problems with the DMP "stuffed" cranks?

I had this one in a STOCK Cylinder 50cc and ran it for ONE DAY, maybe 25 to 30 miles.

Nothing a rebuild cant fix, but damn, a fresh rebuild and 25 miles?

Notice anything missing? Right side orange material is gone :(

Oh, I think I found some of it here, hiding inside the piston :

And here is what I pulled out of the side transfers and such :

Mein Got!

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

Man I'm sorry for your loss. I sure hope this is an isolated instance. I'm putting together a motor with this same crank.

Is there anyone else out there with a DMP horror story.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

oh sweet jesus i just finished bolting one of those together today....

i hope thats a freakout....

yikes!

top FTW!

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

WestSeattle forgot to mention it tore up the bottom end enough that there was metal shavings in with the plastic bits. I would have been more then a little annoyed if that was a polini or metra sitting on the case.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

sweet paper weight man! Maybe you could market em on ebay or something!

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

I have one of those cranks but haven't tried it yet, i find it hard to belive they can all be that defective. If any one runs into a similar issue again make sure u post it. its ashame if these cranks are horrid.

if so stock cranks are still best in my book.

Shit. I just ordered one for my 80 gila build...now I'm scared.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

Fuck stuffed.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

Maybe you could chisel that stuff off the crank some how. Stufing does help the low end but if you are running a larger cyl than stock the already small benefit fades

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

yeah i have not seen any noticable gain from a stuffed crank b4 given i have only tried one on a moby, my puch runs a stock unit and it has just as much power.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

I had to dremel a DMP crank so my starting plate pin would slide into it. That kinda sucked. In the future im gonna wait till the stock one eats it, then go shoppin for aftermarket crap.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

I ended up using a drill bit but I had the same problem. Wish I had known before the motor was all together.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

I just modded the pin on the starting plate. A few small rotations on a grinding wheel did the trick. I would rather modify the cheap part rather than the $100+ crank.

So...are we thinking this crank was defective? Who has run a DMP with no problems? Give me some reassurance that I didn't waste $118 on something that is going to destroy my rebuilt e50 and my 80 gila.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

im with mjunkin

someone say you just went to south america and back on one lol

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

I atleast 500 miles on mine, probabaly a lot more. No problems installing, and its been spun out over 10,000 rpm's for about 20 miles at a time. I would put another one in my next gnarly set-up.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

I think it was defective, at least I hope so, I have never had any problems like this before.

I mean tommy, your motor puts out waaaay more than my super ported stock cylinder and nothing has gone wrong.

I have taken more pictures as I disassemble the motor, and its not pretty.

If you look close, there is a piece of the crank material under the main gear.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

How would it get in there. I thought those sections were totally separate. That is odd

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

Could have happened when I split the cases and didnt notice it fall in there.

Crank itself:

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

god i hope thats just a random freak accident. I bought that crank cuase i thought it might have better quality then a stock or the cheaper crank treats had, but i dont care about it being "stuffed" or not unless the "stuff" comes winging out and causes a mess like that

Im sure there are people that do it, but i think most reg dudes would have a real hard time running a bike that you could notice the stuffed option,

Unless the above happens tho LOL

sorry dude that sucks seriously dude.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

btw..did it run ok with those huge tansfers and a reg stock cylinder?

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

It ran decent.

Low end sucked ass, but mid / cruising and top end were amazing.

Ported to hell, High compression, stock everything except for the crank and Homoet 6p

Bordered on 50mph as setup here.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

oh gotcha. I thought you just hummed a freaking stock 2hp barrell and head on there and went on your way lol

i was thinking man that must have had some seriously freakish flow patterns going on haha

I wonder if DMP would at least be interested in seeing this?

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

man, the first time i saw this i thought 'holy shit, thats gonna come out!' now i'm kinda freaked.

good to know tommy is flogging one in his beast. i guess i'll build it and see what happens.

Re: Problems with DMP cranks ? !

I know a lot of the euro dudes run this crank too. I did see this happen one other time on one of the euro forums, but still probably a fluke. I know there are atleast 5 people running them down in LA, and no problems yet.

Ok. I'm bringing back this thread because I heard that the NEW NEW DMP's are pretty damn defective. Is this true? I heard that they are defective to the point where the old ones are now getting bought up for over retail... if you can even find them. Is this all rumor? Has anyone else had problems? I would like to hear from you guys if this is true or not. (esp. because I just bought one right before I heard all of this. FUCK.)

hmmmm. i think it happened cause you were running way too hot! keep your engine cool. little extra oil in there, jet properly, i know those stock cylinders can get hot hot hot!!! a nice big 24mm carb should cool ya down hahaha

i have one and i aint afraid to use it!
