hit a wall!

Figuratively, thank goodness.

Just to reiterate the setup I'm running right now, I’ve a rebuilt E50 on a box standard maxi. It has a two shoe clutch with paz springs tightened almost all the way down to have the clutch lock on at as high a rev as possible. I have a 70cc airsal kit, a milled down head for a little extra oomf at stoplights (not that it helps my bulky self), A techno boss (trusty but rusty) and a 17mm bing carb on a magnum X intake manifold.

The E50 has been port matched to the airsal (for those doubting whether this is worth doing, acceleration before from 25-40 was ho hum at best, now it's more like "good god, this is a moped?!") Anyway, it will pull hard up to 40, and then it seems to just stop acceleration entirely. Not a gradual easing off of acceleration, a hard pull up to 40 to 41 and then it will simply stay there. It will be like faster, FASTER, FASTER!!! and stop! It's strange. The engine's at a pretty damned high rpm at 40 with only 16x45 gearing, but I know others have gone farther. I have all the ports lined up, everything's matched. What could it be? It doesn't four stroke at top speed, so I might be running ever so slightly lean. But I've a 90 jet in there now, the next size up is a 94 and it splutters with that in.

Oh, and from a dead stop if I open the taps too quickly, the bike will splutter and die. But if I open the throttle slowly, it seems to stop chugging, and start howling up to speed. The needle is at its leanest setting right now, as I was having flooding issues before I got the new float valve.

Re: hit a wall!

maybe you are jetted to high. how does your plug look.

Re: hit a wall!

dude re-gear.

18x40 is a good balance of low end and top speed.

your engine can wind out all the rmps in the world and you won't go any faster once your gearing tops out.

i dunno about your carb stuff, bings kinda suck for figuring out 0 to 1/4 throttle tuning.

Keep in mind, I weigh 280. So the gearing that works nicely for most riders is somewhat lacking for me in terms of acceleration. Based on your picture, you can't weigh more than 150 max, so you have the luxury of being able to gear high and still accelerate. If I can sort out this initial spluttering from 1-8mph, I'll definitely be able to gear nice and low for a higher top end, but to be honest, getting out of the way of the crazy cagers is more important than breaking 40 for me.

Re: hit a wall!

want to tune your ranges better, get a dellorto

i had a similar RPM wall that i can get over, going down hill, and then hit a 2nd powerband. but i dont know how to make it happen with the bike.

porting (actually modifying the cylinder)

timing

???

Re: hit a wall!

loose weight, its free speed!

It's a work in progress! Short of renting a machete, I'm not likely to drop enough to make a difference right this moment.

Re: hit a wall!

hey this is what i did on my 78 maxi i modified the pedal gearing so i can pedal up 10 mph. great for getting out of the way!!!!

because you can only move your legs so fast

Re: hit a wall!

oh ya forgot to mention i weigh 290 and my bike maxes with the techno boss at 34
