My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Hello everyone! I'm new to the wonderful world of mopeds. I just bought a 1979 Puch Maxi II. Its ridiculously slow and I can't get it over 23 mph. Any suggestions?

My '79 puch maxi needs help.

All this is explained in the puch manual 1977mopeds has posted for free (link info below).

Clean the exhaust pipe, clean the carb, clean the air filter, and decarbnize the cylinder head and exhaust port. You want the flow of air and gas to go as smoothly as possible. Also, those stock pipes are very restrictive and require regular cleaning. The Treats shop on ebay or any online moped dealer carry cheap Boss and Bullet exhausts that'll require 1/30 the amount of decarbonization/cleaning due to being clogged. And they'll make your bike much faster, however. Upjet a size or two or three depending on the size carb and jet that came stock. Download the puch manual off www.1977mopeds.com that's under downloads in the toolbar. Best thing ever for people new to working on peds. Good luck.

Thank You so much for the info. I'm really excited about working on it and your input will be very helpful. :-) My roommate has a Sach and is leaving me in the dust.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

That's right, IN THE DUST. lol

I have a big ol' can of carb cleaner I just used on mine, I can show you how tonight, wrench monkey...

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

I will be leaving you in the dust soon!

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Theres definitely more to it Veronica but ilia has a good place to start.

Here is the link to the Puch Service Manual from 1977 Mopeds.

Here is the link with instructions to convert a 1.5HP to 2HP

Easiest performance upgrade is to get an expansion pipe. 1977 Mopeds also sells the bullet I have one a one of my maxis.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Thanks Roberto. I literally just got done looking at the bullet when i read your post. I think I am going to order one.

I also have to rig up a way to have better access to the choke. Its hidden behind the plastic covers. The guy i bought it from left the covers off but i don't want to do that. don't want a shoe lace getting caught in there :-) That would suck. That happened to me when i was a little kid......on a bike...lol **been scarred for life** :-D

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Your going to need that expansion pipe. All the carb cleaner in the world isn't going to make you beat that Sachs. Them D motors are beasts.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

No one ever said it was a D motor.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Look at the picture. Its either a C or D. The only difference is the crank. They will both smoke a Puch engine easy.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

It is a D motor.

Anywhoooooo...... :-D

I took Ilia and Roberto's advice and I just ordered the bullet exhaust. I'm going to see how much that improves my puch's performance and then go from there.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Veronica. There is supposed to be a plastic extension on your choke to make it stick out above the cover.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

bigger intake, bigger carb (14 or 15 for both), maybe a bigger front sprocket, i like 16t, and that bullet pipe and you should be ready to race that sachs after jetting correctly.

my first puch went 38 with the bullet exhaust 14mm bing carb (68 jet), 14mm intake and i drilled a bunch of holes in the stock air box 16 x 45 gearing

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Is this an e50 one speed motor or a ZA50 two speed.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Until my Sachs gets the Athena kit and 21mm Dellorto carb. :-D

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Liz. You don't even need all that. Stock cylinder vs stock cylinder you'll eat her for breakfast.

15mm Amal carb , Puch Bing needle set in the lowest notch, 50 or 55 jet, Dellorto PHBG aftermarket foam filter.

Gianelli exhaust

38 tooth rear sprocket

= 42mph maybe a little more. I have the 55 jet in it and it fourstrokes at the limit.

You could even go to an 12 tooth front sprocket or a smaller rear sprocket. My motor is on the heaviest bike. A 5 Star General Top Tank. And I'm a heavyweight at 300lbs. No problem with excelleration with all that weight. I'm waiting for a 36 tooth rear sprocket as we speak.

Then we're back to. That’s right, IN THE DUST. lol

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

In all reality, I probably shouldn't leave her in the dust since she's my only riding buddy. I'll be riding alone. haha I think that exhaust she just bought will get her up to snuff...

But every once and a while.... in the dust. lol

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

My bike was going really slowly and didn't have much power. I have a 78 puch. When I set the point gap a little wider than the manual suggests I started leaving lots of people, slow cars, and bicycles in the dust. You might want to make sure your timing and gapping is where it needs to be.

It's a really quick thing to do, just take out the spark plug and open up the fly wheel, turn the flywheel until you reach top dead center (TDC) and then make sure its opening up jusstt before it. And make sure its opening up a decent amount.

That's what I did and now I'm loving the speed. Next thing is get a new air filter and exhaust, replace all the gaskets, and start painthing this puppy!

Oh yeah, might want to attach the rear break while I'm at it...

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

my bf's d motor does 40 bone stock.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Veronica /

Thats definitely not on there. Where could i find one of those?

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Veronica /

I think i may try that. :-)

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Are you talking about the choke extension piece. Here is the Puch part number 349.1.15.047.1 I would call BJ at Handybikes and see if he can find one for you. If all else fails, send me an email and I'll try to dig one up for you.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

You never mentioned if this Puch was a 1hp, 1.5hp or 2hp model. Also is it a 1 speed or 2 speed bike. The one speed bike the clutch cable attaches to a lever over the side of the clutch cover. Where as the 2 speed bike the cable enters the motor and the clutch cover has Puch cast into the side of it.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Veronica /

Yeah, thats exactly what i'm talking about. Where is Handybikes? I'm in Buffalo, NY

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Veronica /

Its an e50

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

"Handybikes":http://www.handybikes.com/store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=297 Call them and ask for BJ. Tell him its part 23A in the carb breakdown for a Maxi. And the part number if he needs it. I think he will understand what you need when you explain it to him.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

Veronica /

Sweet. Thanks!

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

PS: If he has it. It would be a good time to look into getting your sprockets and a new chain. Plus any carb jets you might need. Just to make shipping such a small item worth it.

Re: My '79 puch maxi needs help.

ok since we are on engines and transmisions. i have a 76 puch maxi s. its got 2 hp and a two speed so im guessing i have a za50??
