6V Bright lights!?!?!?

ok, yes I'm a little frustrated. I've been looking for about two weeks for a brighter headlight solution. 6v single contact bulb. Right now I have a 21w (maybe a 23w) incandescent bulb. It sucks. It's off at idle and kinda sorta bright at WOT. So...

I want to keep my headlight and I don't want a crappy add on. If I drop the watts will it be brighter because it needs less juice? I've looked for halogens and LEDs. There's only one LED available and it's not even as bright as the one I have (I think). No luck on the single contact halogens. It's the basic moped bulb shape BA15S.

Something like this would rock my world http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1156-SUPER-White-57-LED-Bulb-Globe-12v-7506-1141-BA15S_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33713QQihZ025QQitemZ380030107832QQtcZphoto

What if I use a low watt 12v bright LED? Obviously I don't really know the deal with volts.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

That led may make it look brighter, but will likely throw less light on the road. There really isn't much you can do using the inefficient stock housing. One option is to replace the brake and tail light with led's and then there will be more power left over for the headlight, that may help a little.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

I guess I'll try that, how lame. You'd think there would be some sort of solution after 30 years...

Justin do 'rock ur world' buy the damn thing and inform us on the outcome. Your presents will forever grace this forum...

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

There are solutions, you either have to up the voltage or ditch the horrible stock headlight assy.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

so does anyone know what a 12 volt LED would do on a 6 v set up? also I have no idea how to change my voltage, is it a pain?

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

To change the voltage you'll need to change the lighting coil, and the voltage regulator if there is one.

A 12V led light might not even turn on with a 6V circuit, it depends on how it's wired up. If it does turn on, it'll be about half as bright as it should be.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

less than 1/2 as bright, and fried due to AC voltage.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

Does it have to be a specific type of coil? Are they pretty much universal? Do I really want to open up this can of worms?

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

Tonight i threw one of those fancy car headlights in my grande.

I removed the bulb from the sealed beam headlight with pliers, then found a bulb at an auto parts store that looked short enough to fit in my headlight housing with two fatty contacts.

Its freaking awesome. It fit in the hole in the sealed beam headlight, the contacts fit great, its really bright, and it works great with an 1157 tail light.

Look up an H755 bulb. It worked great for me.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

yeah but thats a 12v

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

I found a 12v conversion coil at 1977 do I need to get any other things to make it work?

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

all new 12v bulbs

and other electric accesories (i think a horn can be excluded from that)

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

I dont know why people freak out about using 12v lights/led's on a 6v ac system. I can tell you for a fact that 12v lights and led's work like a champ on our mopeds. I have a 12v car driving light on the front of my ped and a 12v led trailer stop/tail light on the back of my ped. The driving light is bright as hell and the led tail light is bright as hell. The only time the voltage is an issue is at idle and thats not even really an issue, the lights are still plenty bright. I can post pictures if you want....

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

what light are you using?

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

heres a picture of my led tail light, sorry for large picture

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

Here is my headlight. Sorry again for the huge pictures, I could have resized them but meh...Also on the taillight picture, those zip ties were just there while the epoxy was drying.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

well maybe I'll try one, I don't know. I just want to see and be seen.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

the grande runs on 6v and my setup is still bright, even at idle.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

I just tried a 12v23w Hyper White regular filament bulb and it sucked.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

you think the halogen will make much difference if the regular 12v sucked? I think my moped is known for having shitty lighting (i.e. off at idle)

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

George Smith /

probably, see my jawa at idle produces 8.5v to both headlights and taillights, at rev it hits 11v, so i run regular 12v led on the rear you know the plug and play replacement for standard bulbs, and a standard 6v/21w which is bright as hell at idle...

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

jawas have the most brite lights i ever seen

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

ok so I ordered a bunch of lights the other day. I got a 6v 17w, 6v 24w and a halogen 12v 50w. Then last night I finally find the one that everybody dreams of 6v 50w halogen! but it's $15 plus $8 shipping. has anyone found this elsewhere for less?

also what about the double contact 6v LED? anywhere have it for less than they do on superbrightLED.com?

6V Bright lights!?!?!?

Made a short video of my lighting setup for the people that need to see to believe that 12v leds and lights work well on mopeds. Like I said above, the taillight is a 12v led trailer stop/turn/tail light, the headlight is a cheap autozone driving light and I put a "super bright" white led in the speedometer.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

Newer Tomos have 12v lighting coils. Duh.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

Welp, I look like a douche bag now.....

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

Justin- I found a really good source for 6v halogen bulbs, and you are never going to belive it.

Older hand held spotlights from goodwill.

anything under 500,000 candlepower is 6v. Harbor freight has one that has a dual filament 6v bulb.

It plugs in to 12V, but the rechargeable battery and bulb inside are all 6V.

Don't belive it? go to the store and look at one.

The best I've found was a 6V 25W.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

Justin,

Please let us know how you turn out with those bulbs and what you reccomend.

Re: 6V Bright lights!?!?!?

will do. I got some of the bulbs already but yet to try them out. I still haven't gotten the 12v halogen. I'm thinking maybe that paired with a 6v LED tail will be the best but I didn't order the LED and it's going to be kinda pricey. If anyone knows where to get a dual contact 6v LED for less than at superbrightleds.com please let me know. it's like $7 for the bulb and $6 for the shipping, too much.
