Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

Setup

65 metrakit

15 bing

15 intake

82 jet

Bullet pipe

14-45 gearing

Running 32:1

The other day while riding a big stretch of road, cruising at around 37 mph, I let off the throttle and then tried to accelerate and the bike just bogged to nothing.

When I took out the plug, the plug gap had been filled with some hard material. Not sure if it was metal but the gap was now bridged with something very hard and would no longer spark. I replaced the plug and the bike has run ok for a round 20 miles. White insulator was a nice coffee brown at plug chops. But after the failure it looks like the white now has transparent varnish type stuff on it that is rock hard.

Another member of our branch also had the same problem on a kitted derby.

Any ideas.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

was the stuff on your plug transparant too?

what type of plug are you running?

is your timing advanced or retarded at all?

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

The plug is an Autolite spark plug.

The material looked full of carbon with elements of it that looked like dried varnish, or shellac.

I think It was set around 1.8 before top dead center.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

i wonder what number of NGK plug that autolite would be equal to.

ive been running slightly cooler plugs in my metrakit, B7HS or B8HS, if you think this happened because youre running too hot you could try that.

you should search or check the wiki for that really nice breakdown of sparkplug readings that ive seen before. its got all these nice pictures (color even i think?) maybe one of them has some info for you.

the only thing i can think of that would cause other things to build up on the plug would be if youre really advance and experiancing detonation, with bits of your piston literally melting off. but that would result in a grayish tint, not a transparent one.

maybe something weird in your gas? ive seen plugs turn redish from rusty gas. anything weird going on up in your tank?

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

Tank should be clean. have an inline filter. I may be running hot. I am going to try and re-time. None of the pictures in that diagram match up to what I am seeing.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

joel, it was a fluke. just keep riding it!

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

autolite 4093=ngkb6hs

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

Both Jona R and I have had this problem more than once.

I am not sure its a fluke.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

Jona was in a different situation though his bike is probably just jetted lean, he just pulled off the air filter while he was riding and was blasting the whole ride. He was also backfiring quite a bit. Also his temp gauge read like 250 while my cast kit doesn't ever get above 215. He probably was overheating.

You on the other hand know your bike isn't jetted lean because you were checking it before. If your plug chop has really changed but your jetting hasn't then you need to check for something else like an air leak or a reduced fuel flow.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

I checked quite extensively for an air leak. Found one, but when the bike warmed up it was gone.

I am going to go with some cooler spark plugs of better quality and see it that helps. I am also going to be changing the gearing to 16-45. and maybe I can keep up with you guys.

The Major question for me is, what would cause a plug to bridge like that and cause that varnishing of the plug.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

What kind of oil are you running.

Some dino oils will allow a whisker to form. Used to happen on my Yamaha. You knock the whisker off and you are good to go. Try a different oil

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

using a high quality synthetic.

This was a chunk of build-up, filling the gap in the plug.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

Which oil?

I would recommend changing brands.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

ha, that happened to jona's derbi too?

my plug basicly melted into nothing while at richmond. the metrakit head i found out later takes a 3/4" plug instead of the stock 1/4" plug. maybe that caused it, maybe it didnt. I now run a b9es and it hasnt happend since.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

Vic, that was caused by bad timing. its the only explanation.

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

huh?

" found out later takes a 3/4" plug instead of the stock 1/4" plug. "

Re: Metra Kit Sparkplug Problems!

ciao, b6Hs = 1/4" of threads b9ES = 3/4" of threads

peter, my timing is so dead on its not even funny, I've checked a million times.

unless you meant bad timing like it exploding right in the middle of a race bad timing.
