magura throttle and dellorto carb

so i went down to warbux mopeds to buy a new throttle for my 19mm phbg dellorto carburetor, and they recommended this one:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/26512291@N03/2486972317/"; title="Picture 7 by ronnyjamesdio, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3229/2486972317_06e8546092.jpg"; width="500" height="452" alt="Picture 7" /></a>

problem was, at the time they didn't have any throttle cables on hand. they advised me to buy a double ended puch throttle cable online. i did, and i went to install it today . . . but the cable is way, way too long, even with the adjustment bolt on the carb screwed all the way out. i don't see how i could use a single-ended universal throttle cable though, since, as you can see in the above pic, a knarp end on the cable is required to hook it up. what do i need to do or buy to get this to work?

ps - i know this is more of a repair issue than a performance one, but i didn't think the repair folks would be familiar with the phbg, so i decided to post here.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

Are you kidding?

The small "knarped" end goes to the carb and the open end threads through the throttle where the at screw is on the bottom.

Come on man, your better than this.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

no - this throttle requires a cable with knarps on both ends. there's no screw to tighten down onto the open end of a universal cable. my friend loaned me the other magura throttle and a universal cable (one that's only knarped on one end) that i've installed just like you're saying . . . this one doesn't work the same, look at the picture

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

"this throttle requires a cable with knarps on both ends. "

--> at least, that's my theory, since there's no way to clamp on the loose end of a universal cable . . . but maybe there's a knarp i'm supposed to buy, which i then put on the cable after i've cut it the right length? or what?

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

Dude, just cut it to length, and then melt a big fat drop of solder on the end of the cable that goes into the throttle assembly. Let it cool, then rip it!

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

ok so the cable i got is the stock one . . . it works with my old (original) grip and my old bing. so this new grip doesn't work with the original cable, or with just a regular universal single-ended cable . . . so what does it work with? or, how do i get it to work with a regular single-ended cable?

sorry that this is so dumb, but c'mon, i'm stuck here!

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

J, go to scooterworks buy a throttle cable pinch bolt. THen use it. easy peasey.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

So your telling me you don't have the one in the picture? The one I just installed on a bike yesterday?

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

The cable threads through the hole, then tighten the screw at the bottom. It's a slide throttle.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

dude, there's no screw - that's why i posted the picture. there should be a screw, right? but look - no screw. brennan's saying it's called a throttle cable pinch bolt . . . so i need a throttle cable pinch bolt, and then it will work, right? or is there a screw there that i'm not seeing?

ps - sorry i'm such a dumbass, and thank you so much for bearing with me!

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

i need this, too, right?

I have the same problem with my stock puch cable and my dellorto carb. I plan to do what ar71c40k3 said with the solder trick. I tried two adjusters, but it's really lame and hokey. I'm actually surprised more people don't complain about this with all the dellorto/metra kit setups people seem to be buying these days.

I have that Magura throttle setup on my bravo and it's a slide throttle. Is that what you have? Does yours have the slide that runs left to right when you twist the throttle? Maybe it's just missing the screw? You can get a screw at the hardware store.

You souldn't need the L 84 pinch bolt posted above. That won't do you any good.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

I have a throttle on one of my bikes that requires a double ended cable. I use one of the 5.5mm cable ends shown here:

They are available at a few different places. I think I got mine at Moped Junkyard when I was ordering some hard to find parts for a Garelli. The 5.5 mm size works perfectly, though.

So, I tried the whole solder on the end of the cable trick last night....I wonder how many people have actually done this with success. I worked at it for quite a while and couldn't get it to hold. I heated up the cable instead of the solder and it just wouldn't stick.

I ended up putting JB Weld on it. I'm letting dry overnight to see if it bonds to the cable at all. If it works, I'll be impressed. It was definitely much easier to shape than solder was.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

There is no screw with that throttle grip, it does take a double ended cable. I used a NOS puch cable that was double ended and it worked quite well, but I got the last one from my vendor. I have, however, successfully soldered ends onto a cable like that. Get out your soldering gun and a torch. Torch the cable until its hot, and then melt the solder onto it, using the iron to keep the cable hot while you put the solder on. My big Weller solder gun just doesn't crank out the heat to blast a big long heat sinking cable like that, but you can't deny MAPP gas!

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

see ok that's what i thought . . . so it's just that the regular double ended puch throttle cable is the wrong length for my phbg! i ordered a cable pinch bolt, i'm going to use that . . . soldering sounds a little too ghetto

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

Soldering is fine. It's the same thing that they do at the factory.

You did get the tiny pincher right? B/c the big one will not fit in the throttle.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

i'm worried about that . . . i ordered the three kinds they had, i'm hoping one fits/can be ground. i would go up to scooterworks and just get the right kind first, but i killed my car last week and it's 120 blocks north of me

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

blue line to brown line = done!

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

well, 55 bus to red line to brown line actually . . . i mean it's like an hour and a half each way. but you're right, i should just do it.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

Ipod + stoned = running moped after 3 hours.

Your call though, whatever.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

haha, that's true, and i might even get some reading done, wouldn't that be a trip . . . ok i'm going this afternoon!

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

wait, it's far as hell from the brown line! how the hell do you even get to that place?

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

When I would take the train i would brown line it up, get off around irving and skateboard there.

Re: magura throttle and dellorto carb

when soldering it really REALLY helps to have either brazing flux or acid flux. I've gotten in the habit of making my own knarps though, out of brass stock, and a tiny screw. They are much easier to adjust and fix if it breaks in the field.
