PA50 to PA50II motor swap

I came across a 1982 PA50II parts bike and want to flip the motor to a 1979 bike. I notice the wires coming off it are different from the old motor. Also guess I have to flip the CDI unit onto the old bike. Anyone out there do this swap and any advice you can give would be appreciated.

Re: PA50 to PA50II motor swap

you can put the old points stator and flywheel on the 82 motor, bolt it up and go.. as far as i know. i have a 1980 motor in my 83, i simply put the cdi stuff on the older motor and it runs perfectly.

if you want to use the cdi system you're going to need to use the whole wiring harness from the 82

i may be interested in some other parts from that 82, namely a blinker lens :)

Well, you do not NEED a full wiring harness to install a CDI motor. You will have to fabricate some amount of wiring, though. You will also need a CDI ignition coil, as it is different than the points model.

If you can't read schematics, or don't know how to, or don't want to make your own "mini-harness", then just swap over "number 5" on the attached picture.

Re: PA50 to PA50II motor swap

I'm OK making the wiring harness and thanks for the picture. I've got the complete setup from the bike I just hope it'll all work. Are these CDI units reliable?

Re: PA50 to PA50II motor swap

I,ve got the blinker units you want I have one complete with the reflector and wiring or just the lens. I must tell you they aint perfect but they aint broken either

Re: PA50 to PA50II motor swap

sorry to hijack your thread with the blinker lens discussion, i'll email you about it.

Re: PA50 to PA50II motor swap

To run a CDI setup, don't you also need to install a battery?

Re: PA50 to PA50II motor swap

no thats just for the blinkers, all the wires leading to the CDI box come straight from the stator
